My coteacher just informed me that our principal was ordered by the MoE to run a short winter camp for all of the teachers in our school... a camp run by me, the lone NET, to teach the math, art, science, history, Japanese, computer, etc teachers English. Why these technical high school teachers require an English camp is beyond me, but I know I'm obligated and see no reason to argue against it.

What's strange is that my coteacher told me that the principal wants to know whether or not other GEPIK teachers are having to do something similar. Yes, I was specifically asked to ask other teachers if they're being tasked with running a camp for their fellow teachers. Confused

So... Have any other GEPIK teachers been told to prepare a camp like this for non-English teachers working in the same school? (I'm in Gwangmyeong, if you're curious.)

Bonus: Would this qualify as overtime pay? My coteacher made a point of telling me the principal likes the idea more because it doesn't push me out of my vacation days, so I wouldn't require extra reimbursement. Is this true? I was under the assumption that summer and winter camps were extra. This is my first camp (been at this school two years and have enjoyed the extra vacation time tons), so I've never bothered looking into the camps.

Just got home and checked my contract... no. Sad Dear sweet Lord, I hope the principal realizes how stupid this is. Dumb ideas that get me extra money, alright. Dumb ideas that make extra work for me with no extra paycheck weight... Evil or Very Mad

I'm a GEPIK teacher and I do three weeks of camp in summer and winter for no extra pay. The camp is for students and it involves a 90 minute class each day.

So, if you had a better deal for awhile, you were lucky. No whining.

Also, what did you do to get into this kind of trouble? They don't usually give you extra work without some reason behind it.

Read my first post again; there's no whining.

Again, read the first post. The Ministry of Education has apparently ordered this. I was then asked to find out if this directive was being issued to other schools as well.

I'm guessing your school got a directive from the MoE to keep the foreign teacher busy, not necessarily but possibly including teaching non-English teachers. No chance in hell all the other subject teachers will sign up, but a handful might. Have fun.

There's no 'signing up' for anyone according to my coteacher. It'll be mandatory for everyone.

The School Board officials love to send out memos trashing the foreign teachers. Just imagine that you're a good teacher and you don't do anything wrong and your school has new Korean teachers who want to be nice to you. But they get memos from the MOE that tell them to keep their foreign teachers busy because foreign teachers are all losers and scum. Younger Korean teachers don't know how to sift through that kind of nonsense and you'll get stuck doing stupid busy work. It has happened and is happening now. No matter how hard you work or how much good you do, the MOE continues to trash all of us with their memos about our alleged "behavior." Your co-teacher may not tell you about those memos but all GEPIK schools get them.

The one time I saw a school do this, it was fairly funny. Everyone realized pretty quickly that nobody (especially the older teachers) could be bothered to listen to a lecture entirely in another language. So, one of the Korean English teachers stood up beside the native-speaking English teacher, and translated every single sentence she said.

That might be what happens.

Anyway, if you are looking for a great lesson, think about teaching something about "school English." You know, short expressions they can use in the classroom or in the hallway, "Good job," / "You're late," / "Please pass in your homework." Also, encourage them to tell their students the English name for a process or subject they are learning about that day. "Geography" / "the quadratic equation" / "allusion."

There are a steady stream of memos from the provincal schol board to schools and most deal with paperwork issues. But there are also memos that "deal" with "what those evil foreigners are doing now." If even one foreign teacher gets caught doing something illegal then memos fly about how the schools should watch all of us because we're all doing it. Runners are old hat. If there's a couple of runners then memos will fly about how we should all be watched because we're all getting ready to do runners. All of the memos are negative in tone and inexperienced Korean teachers and principals often take them as 100% accurate. More experienced Korean teachers understand how to separate the important ones from the nonsense. The memos get very negative around the summer and winter breaks and what the "evil foreign teachers" plan to do during their breaks. They even send out ideas for busy work to keep all of us out of bars and brothels and Itaewon and Thailand.

Have yet to see these 'negative' memos, but then again it may be a Seoul thing. They show me almost everything and I also 'glance' at stuff.

Anyways all my ct's are in their 40's/50's and do know how to 'sift' things around for a more comfortable off-semester. Just say they are as lazy as I am and all of us definitely do not want to teach useless classes during the breaks. If you have a newbie ct then you maybe out of luck.

Yes.

Although- my school recently got a memo concerning a suicide. Naturally, my HT thought I might flip and I had to assure her public school teaching is nothing worth dying for Cool
