I am at an SMOE public middle school.

Here are the details:

- February has ~3 weeks of vacation time.
- My school wants me to do a 2 week "Spring" camp in February at the beginning of the vacation period.
- I have enough vacation time left to cover the entire February vacation period.
- I have already done a 3 week Summer camp, and will be doing a 3 week Winter camp.
- I don't want to use vacation days during the December/January vacation.

What I want to know:
- Can I tell my school that I will use my paid vacation during the February vacation period, which means I will not be doing "Spring" camp? Or will I be breaking my contract by doing this?

So they want you to not take vacation and do a camp instead?

I have 15 days of vacation time left.

My school wants me to use 10 days for the December/January vacation, then use 5 days for February vacation. That means I'll do camp for 2 weeks, then have a 1 week vacation.

I have plans to do a long 3 week trip with my girlfriend in February, so I don't want to do any camp.

I would rather come in to school and deskwarm during December/January vacation, and use the 15 days for February vacation.

From what I've read in past posts, you must take a vacation - that's more important than camps and if the only time available is when they want you to do the camp, you can force them to cancel it. However in your case there is time in Dec/Jan. They can force you to arrange the vacation days on those days instead. You can't interfere with camp, unless there isn't another option. Your preferences don't come into it.

How did you get so many days of vacation? You are supposed to use half in the summer and half in the winter so you don't run into problems like this, I believe.

I only used 5 paid vacation days during Summer vacation.

I let my head co-teacher know that I wanted to go on a nice trip in February, so I would save most of my vacation days for February.

Don't know what to tell you. You could try throwing her under the bus (she deserves it, if she knew and didn't say anything). That probably won't change anything about the camp and it will just make her mad.

sounds like you have met your requirements of work time with summer/winter camps. this spring camp is an extra thing right? they can't make you do that. and, they should understand.

You really need to call your district office. Find out from them. SMOE is the hardest bunch to work with on anything related to camps. GEPIK & EPIK are more malleable to reason or so I hear.

Your school can make you do the spring camp though. Technically its not camp, it's just extra classes during a time your supposed to be desk warming anyway so it's covered under your weekly 22. Like what another poster said. Your preferences don't matter, it all depends on your school

For the record, It is BS to do an extra camp in the winter. Unless I was getting a cut, I wouldn't do it.

Your vacations take priority over anything the school has planned. The school can't override Labor Law simply because they want to use you for a camp.

Tell your school you are sorry but you will be using all of your vacation days.

If you plan on renewing there, then your school may make you use half of your allotted vacation in the summer and half in the winter to make sure you don't get a long break again.

I may get flamed here - and i infer nothing about the OP.

I feel it is quite important when discussing the SMOE Vacation issue to look at the whole year - i know this can be difficult - because being in the education field our vacation has to be taken at certain times because our customers are students.

Now the OP took 5 days in Summer we are allowed 21 a year which i think most people use in a 10/11 style block. -My question for the OP is during Summer Vacation time ( camp + 5 days .... ) did you stay at home but not use vacation days or did you desk warm.
If you did desk warm or Camp for all of summer time vacation time period apart from the 5 days - then you have a case.
If you had time off with pay but not counted as Vacation then i feel the case is not as clear cut - just because one wishes to have a really long vacation and saves up days for it , but also takes paid days off as a "bonus" does not fit with my impression of how teachers should act.

Again i am not saying the OP did this - but with the lack of details provided in the post- i feel posters need to take this possibility into account.

We have a job which gives us 21 days Vacation - but we do not have the freedom of an office worker in choosing exactly how we can use them - there are conditions or parameters that need to be considered.
