No friends around online at the moment.

Would you consider 30 night ($50) an ok price for a hotel?

When in Thailand I paid 9 a night for what I thought was pretty darn cool. Location - great. Quality of room... Not bad. Food... Amazing.

This time It's hong kong which I know is more expensive. But still want to get an overall thought on the matter since I'm not too experienced with it. Anything over 10 is considered an atrocity for me, generally.

Do hotels even exist at cheaper prices? To me, anything under 10 sounds like it would be an an atrocity.

Fifty bucks is reasonable. I'd rather pay more for a decent, comfy place, especially when I'm on vacation. But then again I'm not a recent grad or anything, so I'm not used to living on a college budget.

If a guesthouse is acceptable, head to Chungking Mansions in Kowloon. Much cheaper than that mentioned. They'll try to rip you off, but you can haggle the price down. Comfy, clean rooms with TV, fridge etc. I stayed in one place on around the 7th floor in one of the towers. The owner was awesome (native to Hong Kong). Really nice and honest guy (no haggling required). Can't remember the name of the place, though. I paid about 150 Hong Kong dollars a night for a double room.

Under 10 in the developed world for your own room is going to be pretty hard to find.

Hey awesome information thanks. Failing that I might try this whole couch surfing malarkey.

Of course I didn't mean my budget was 10 squid, but I got it pretty awesome in Thailand so I hate having to upgrade in price. Like spending 200 on a playstation 2, and than having to spend twice that on a playstation 3. Naturally I didn't buy.

If a "quickie" is what you're looking for, maybe you should find a place that charges by the hour?

Chungking Mansions is conveniently located close to transportation and vibrant neighbourhood. Be warned that you'll get some touts greeting you at ground level and trying to convince you to stay elsewhere. Not the cleanest of places but definitely full of character(s).

Heh I found a site on that place - STAY AWAY from Chung King Mansions (Tsim Sha Tsui) which is the infamous back packers doss house. The place is sleazy, dirty, and totally overpriced for what is on offer. Give it a wide berth. The picture is a typical view from the window of most rooms!

Is one of the comments.

But this was 8 years ago. Old comments. Sounds intriguing regardless.
