I am going to a pot luck for Christmas (I'm sure many foreigners will be doing this) but am unsure of what to bring. My cooking skills aren't really that great....

Should I just buy something from a takeaway?

What?

If this is a Korean pot-luck then what is required of you is either fried chicken or pizza....if you are going to a foreign potluck I would suggest that you make an attempt to cook something...EVERYONE is capable of cooking, it's simply a matter of following directions and not being afraid of cooking. Think of your favorite Christmas side dish from home and go online and look for a recipe. You just might surprise yourself.

Yes, can't go wrong with a dessert item.

Except when you have a party with a bunch of people who are inept in the kitchen and end up with a potluck that is more than fifty percent dessert items.

Make mashed potatoes.

Try a corn pudding or casserole. The ingredients aren't too difficult to find here and there are lots of recipes on the net. There are also some good substitution guides available if you cannot find the exact ingredients.

Here's a link to one recipe. There are other recipes that call for things like sour cream, or a box of jiffy mix. You can probably use regular milk, yogurt, or even soy milk if you don't have the evaporated kind and I've never tried it with the cinnamon sugar topping that this one has. I'd probably skip that part.

When you figure it out, let me know. I have been pulling my hair out over the situation.

Glazed carrots are pretty easy as well. You can skip the orange peel that this recipe calls for and it won't suffer much for the lack. I never seem to have an orange when I need it.

I've seen dudes bring KFC buckets or large wings to potluck dinners. There is a different expectation level of what a dude will bring as opposed to a woman. Laughing

Homemade apple sauce is always a winner. It takes some time, but isn't all that hard to do. Peel and cut up a bunch of apples, boil them down with lemon juice, and add brown sugar and cinnamon to taste. I add a bit of dark rum, too.

If it's Korean, a box of chewy rice cakes will be a huge hit.

I realize it's a bit late, but for future reference.. Veggie trays are always nice. Smile Just get some carrots, cucumbers, pickles and cheese, cut them up, maybe green peppers, and so on, put them on a platter, with something to dip them in, and you're good to go! Smile

Yes. Here is an easy recipe for a chicken and vegetable platter.
