| Last summer when I was back home I filed the past 6 years taxes. I didn't owe a penny to Washington, not even a penalty. I did have to pay the tax preparation office though. You'll have to know how much money you've made for each year. They don't ask for proof but you should get a document form your employer. |

| The only reason it would be an issue is if you plan to file a FAFSA in the next year or so. There is no reason for you to spend any cash at H&R Block or any other similar business to file your taxes. |

| I wouldn't worry too much. I just got a letter from the Australian tax office the other day saying that my tax return form was "outstanding". I was particularly flattered because I don't remember sending it in. |

Would it make sense to anybody to keep pay stubs from their former Korean employers just in case they, in some unforeseen instance, were examined for tax fraud for not filing for periods of international employment?
I've been trying to track some of my employers down for such the fact. |

also remember there is a difference between tax "evasion" and tax "avoidance"...
it was unpaid taxes that finally got Al Capone in the end (that and syphilis)
it's rumored that he never lost a game of "bocce" while in prison... |

| You need to file every year. You can drop off your return at the embassy in Seoul and they will forward to the IRS. |

| while it might seem like a very intimidating process i found it to be the opposite. go to the local IRS office the next time you are in the states and ask them to print out any w-2's you might be missing. they will tell you what years you missed filing. sometimes they will file for you if you waited too long and then you always have the option to file an amendment. if you need some assistance go to a place like HR Block and pay a few dollars and they will take care of all the paperwork. most likely you just have some paperwork to take care off. dont stress on it.... |

Cheers! I needed a laugh,
As for taxes I totally agree just do them when you're back home. Because we're earning a pittance it's not a big deal at all. Might even be able to claim a bit for clothing but not sure on that |

| I haven't filed with the IRS in a few years. I plan to go back, but I'm waiting until the entire place goes up in flames and there's not only not an IRS but not a working government to give a rat's butt whether some expat filed his forms properly. The way things are going, 2012 might be the year when that happens |

When you starting paying taxes again back home. You will have to file for the missing years you lived outside the states. |

You need to file. You almost certainly owe nothing, so there will be no penalties. But you must file anyway. |
If they catch that you have not been filing, even though you did not make enough to pay tax, then they will make you pay the tax on what you made in Korea as if you had made it in the USA. H & R Block has that ad in the Korean English papers all the time. You are OK as long as you make the first move. Even if you have not filed for years you are Ok if you file now fo those years. If they make the first move, you have to pay what you would have payed on the money made in Korea as if you had earned it in the US. Could wipe you out. |
