I'm actually in Canada right now, but when I was on exchange in Korea, one of the other exchange students told me about an app that gives you a Korean phone number (or you have to put in a Korean phone number, I forgot which...) and you can text for free and people can reply without being charged extra.
At that time, I didn't have an ipod touch so I didn't get the name of the app and I lost contact with that student =(

I want to text to Korea to my Korean friends and have them reply without getting charged international fees (all the apps I've found give you US numbers), does anyone know this app? My Korean friends don't have ipods, and Korean texting plans are cheap anyways so they don't know =(

Oh, and if there's an app like that for Canada, that'll be awesome too!!!!

Thanks =)

You mean actual SMS texting? That I'm not sure about, maybe TextPlus or TextFree.

For smartphone to spartphone chatting there is Kakao Talk, which only works if both people use the app. I have it and it's cross-platform so you can chat to i-users and Android users.

I tried Textplus, but it gives you a US number only, so if anyone outside of the US replies, they'll be charged for international texting.

Textfree also only gives a US phone number right?

I don't have a smartphone, just an ipod touch
But on Kakao's website it says I can use the ipod touch with it. It says you have to put in your own phone number, so maybe that's the app my friend was talking about.
Since i'm in Canada, I don't have a Korean number though... If I used my friends number can I still text that friend, I wonder...? I'll need to test that out.

An app that gives you a Korean number would be more helpful though.

Although kakaotalk looks good, because the sender and the receiver needs the app it isn't that great for me =(

I need an app that can send texts to any kind of phone.

the only one that would be free is still kakao talk, but it only works for smartphones and wireless internet devices.

I dont know of anything like that, but both whatsapp and kakao talk work internationally and all you need is a valid cell phone in any country to get it working.

kakao is free and whatsapp costs a buck but whatsapp will work on blackberries as well.
