Just found out my camp schedule and student list. 3 weeks, 3 classes per day.
Week 1: 8 students
Week 2: 3 students
Week 3: 2 students.
This SMOE policy of 3 weeks camp needs to be more flexible. It would make more sense to put all the kids together and shorten the camp. All my plans for group activities and games are now rendered null and void. Any ideas what I can do with such small groups? |

i would suggest combining those students and making a super 3 week camp. that's what i do at my school. 11 students signed up, they wanted me to split up those 11 students and do class A for 2 periods and class B for another 2 periods for 3 weeks. i told them a class of 5 students is not a class and that i can't do any activities, so they combined it and all i have to do is teach 2 periods a day for 3 weeks. but with the same students. |

I wish I had small classes like that! All of my extra classes, including camps, are always at least 20 students, if not up to 30. |

I've just been told my 20 days (4 weeks) of camps are actually 'conversation classes (no co-teacher or money for materials).
I've told the school that I have to have a quorum of 3 kids or the class is cancelled for that day. They weren't happy, but there the ones who gave all the GET's in the district a warning letter about 'touching'. I don't want any kid ruining my reputation - so if less than 3 kids - the kids get sent home, and it's just more deskwarming for me.
Looks like I'll be deskwarming for every afternoon and non-teaching day as well. I hope you scamps are gonna write some interesting posts.
Good luck. |

That's a good point actually. I work in a girls middle school, so I don't want to put myself in any uncomfortable situations. There have been numerous false accusations against teachers in the past, that I think it's fair to refuse to teach one to one with a female student. |

I was teaching a middleschool girl one on one at my old hagwon. I asked her where she wanted me to sit. i.e. across from her beside her. She gestured for me to sit on her lap
Hehe... watch out for those middle school girls |

I wish I had that too. There's huge level gaps between my 10 students. Some don't know the alphabet, some don't know phonics, some can't count, etc. There's no point in sticking them in the same class. |

Sat across from her and made sure she couldn't play footsies with me, I had another middle school girl do that once
I now prefer the teaching elementary kids, its all much more innocent |

This thread has taken a decidedly creepy turn for the worse. Back on track, any ideas for what to do with 2-3 students for 15 classes? |

I'm in a similar position, but based on what happened with my summer camp I knew to expect it.
I have about 10 students signed up, and they're all pretty good students so I expect them to come. I got their emails and phone numbers when they signed up, so I can remind them.
We have camp for 3 weeks. Week 1 we're making a movie, the students will write/direct it, I got this idea from a workshop. Week 2 we're going on field trips together, and I'll come up with some sort of assignment for each place we visit. Week 3 we're doing "cultural" stuff, learning about customs, sports, games, tv, etc.
I'm actually looking forward to it. My school is pretty cool in letting me run my own show. I work at a high school, btw. |

That sounds like a lot of fun! I originally designed and submitted a more standard/academic winter camp, but I'd really like to do something more fun.
If you wouldn't mind, would you be willing to share any lesson plans or materials you have regarding your movie week? I'd really like to do something like that, but I assume your workshop materials are much better than what I could muster up on short notice. |

2-3 students sounds perfect. They have nowhere to hide, you can actually get some real growth here, but it's going to take a lot of effort. The activities will require a lot less time to teach them, to do. You've got to get a LOT more prep work ready for it, but look at it like an opportunity. Think you're a good teacher? This is where you'll really get to find out your strengths and weaknesses. Good luck. |

I was hoping to keep it lighthearted and as fun as possible. These kids need a break from the serious business, and so do I. I had some great creative ideas that required group participation, which can be done with 2-3 students but will be a lot less fun. I prefer teaching larger groups of 12-15, where the kids can work on projects and compete against other teams. That's out of the window now, so what kind of things do you suggest? |

I was scheduled for a winter camp for a couple of weeks this January. 5 or 6 kids are interested. My co-teachers don't want to do it, and were going to try to force me to stay in Korea. But I'd already made an arrangement with the principal to leave Korea and do the Cert TESOL in early January (to February). Lots of work, but I am very glad for the break from Korea! My co-teacher's weren't too happy, but there's nothing they can do............ |
