| smartphones save lives. i was able to perform open heart surgery on a puppy involved in a road accident by googling the procedure on my phone before any puppy death gurgling took place. |

Quite sad? Ouch, another nobody pseudonym attacks.
Think about the irony of your own post; have you nothing better to do than be a johnny-come-lately and say nothing of worth when you revive dying posts?
Maybe you can find an intelligence app? |
Johnny come lately? I was simply trying to steer the thread back into a positive direction explaining what it is about my Galaxy that I love so much... and demonstrating that you don't have to be a mindless zombie as you seem to imply to use one.
I'd love nothing more to be sitting next to you with my phone and the gf's Iphone4 on the table so I can purposefully start annoying you by playing with our phones non-stop (sadly I've seen many Korean couples doing just that when out at a cafe). It's a shame that will never happen though as it doesn't seem you're the type to get out much. |

The hardware to make a smartphone is insanely expensive (more than the average laptop computer), hence the high prices.
You'll still have to get yourself a monthly plan with data, you're looking at 50,000-80,000/month typically. Not horrible considering what they enable you to do. If you own the phone outright you avoid any cancellation fees with your carrier (in Korea at least) so your contract will simply be month to month. E2 Visa holders can't get the sweet subsidized deals that others here get, so we end up paying huge amounts up front for our smartphones.
Is it worth it? For me yes.... I can watch football games streaming (North American style) on my phone while riding the bus to work, while at work (thanks to flash support, this alone makes me never want to buy another Apple product again)... adjust my fantasy roster, email people, do anything else I want to do on the internet, listen to music, watch movies (without converting them), make free video calls (thanks Tango) etc etc etc... it's a whole other world. Iphone users get a more basic and limited experience (speaking as a former iphone owner myself) and it's also a lot easier to use though... (providing your computer plays nicely with Itunes) so if you're just looking to dabble your feet into the waters perhaps an Iphone is for you. If you want a full on smartphone experience, Android is pretty much the only way to go right now. |
Personally, I got a smartphone (LG Optimus One) for free with a two-year contract. It uses Android 2.2 and I pay about 35000 a month. I only get a 100mb data plan, however, so I use wi-fi whenever possible to download anything. |

Sounds pretty good. Are you on an E2 visa? |

"...my Galaxy that I love so much." Thanks for making my point. You would love nothing more than to sit next to me and try to annoy with your smartphone? So then, that love exceeds that which you have for your Galaxy. |

theres one major flaw with your argument mr cunning languist. smartphones are bloody fun and convenient!
i dont see any rush of smartphone owners going back to using old phones just because they can do some of the main functions on those. thats such a dumb argument...its like buying a new upcoming sandy bridge computer or getting a pentium. they can more or less do the same things but the user experience will be completely different. u want windows 7 or dos? have u even got a cellphone? then stop using that and use some pen and paper. its so much more personal and really means something when u use that. your talking bullcrap mate. forwards ever. backwards never. thats the way it always has been and the way it always will be.
if u would rather use dated user interfaces..limit your options for time wasting while commuting..or even how you communicate with friends and family i wont judge you and thats entirely your ridiculous closed minded choice. me im happy having multiple entertainment/communication options at my disposal. me, i'll take the option of not getting lost while driving round seoul coz i could use my gps. or picking up bargains from craigslist coz i was able to check regularly and be first to put in offers on items. or calling my sick mum on skype when the option to be near a computer is not there. or answering the urgent emails on the integrated gmail that keeps my business sharp and responsive.
now as for antisocial behaviour while using the phone. maybe that could be considered bad however i imagine sooner or later you will get used to it as we all are now at the terrible drivers and lack of courtesy on the roads the world over. it is already becoming the norm. as with morals our behaviours arent set in stone...they evolve for better or for worse. u can swim against the tide but i'd rather relax in a rubber ring and go with the flow.
i also really want to sit next to you to annoy u but to the other side to jhicks and have a light sabre match with him while your in the middle. that would be awesome. then id photo u then in the art app n doodle a big sausage on top of your head and show u that for your approval whilst similatanously showing my mate on cam ur reaction. although my worry would be if your one of those people who is so angry with society at large and rage about your own social failings that you would suddenly at that point go on a killing rampage targeting cellphone users.
in the end im just seriously glad i wasnt born into peasantry and bitter that i couldnt join in on the smartphone experience. if your completely satisfied with your own situation good for you and merry christmas to you too. |

I'll say thanks to languistic.
Time to update my handphone (an antique with a cracked screen) & felt some vague pressure to "get with it" & buy into a smartphone. On the evidence above, all I really need in my pocket is a phone. |

thats cool schwa. everyone has free will and the freedom to make informed decisions about what they want. im not on a mission to make anyone else buy a smartphone. far from it. many people would be wasting their money and just wont have a use for the extra features. |
