I heard that they eat ilk in Canada. Is that true? How does it taste? |

Perhaps you are implying that "ilk" was a typo or grammatical error. If so, you were incorrect. The expression "of that ilk" means approximately "of that type" or "similar in type to." The more you know... |

My bad. I didn't realize that it was just a really unfunny joke. (I think that's what you're getting at.) |

Which matters more- the quantity or quality of calories? A professor of nutrition went on a diet that was two-thirds junk food, but limited himself to no more than 1,800 calories a day:
"For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
"His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
"The premise held up: On his 'convenience store diet,' he shed 27 pounds in two months....
"Haub's 'bad' cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his 'good' cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent...
"Haub's body fat dropped from 33.4 to 24.9 percent."

I read the whole article. Interesting food for thought. Pass that plate of Twinkies, please. |

It seems that I encountered some "foaming at the mouth with hatred" type chaps who were all excited about making wild ad hominem type attacks on the advocates of a worthy idea when I made this original post. I'll name no names as my purpose was never to cross rhetorical swords with anyone, but rather to point out for the benefit of those who may not follow these issues that there is a great paradigm shift happening in recent times wherein all the authorities on these dietary issues are finally being forced to admit that they've been pushing a very unscientific unproven low-fat fad for about 50 years that has done massive damage to the health of millions. Oops.
Before my post was slandered for mentioning Dr. Mercola's great educational contributions to helping bring about this Dietary Enlightenment. This article doesn't reference Dr. Mercola at all but rather Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and others who tell the same story.
The last days of the low-fat diet fad. http://www.grist.org/article/2011-03-04-low-fat-diet-fad
This great error is being acknowledged at the highest echelons of the mainstream health and nutrition communities. It represents a 180 degree change in dietary advice and wisdom. Such info is often a little slow to make it to the awareness of the public at large (as some of the posts here so admirably demonstrate), so considering its vital import to all living humans, I am happy to do my own minuscule bit to help the spread of this potentially life-saving information.
I highly recommend that anyone who eats (that's everyone) and anyone who cares about their health (mostly everyone) read this short article to learn about the sea change in dietary information that is happening right now. It's very exciting and may well change your perceptions about healthy eating. Considering that 2/3 of Americans are overweight with a very high percentage of them being obese, this article may actually help you to save your own life if you're anything like that demographic.
Hope that 's not being overly dramatic.
Cheers and happy eating. It's time for me to eat a tablespoon of coconut oil and go to bed now. Good night. |
