Why not tell them, "It is hard to quit smoking, many people struggle to do so...blah blah blah... but I will try my best to stop immediately because I want to stay at this school." Some BS like that, that should give you up to 6 months and by that time, you will have left. Act with humility and add some guilt into the mix. As long as they know you are trying your hardest to stop, even if your not, it will give them the answer they want.

Yes, it's not honest. But it might give you those extra 6 months.
Generally speaking, it should be something else that they have an issue with. But you may be an exception.

Because I only want to stay 6 months past the end of my contract. And if I no longer have this job then I will have to quit my other part-time job because the hours match up well. Then I would have to find a job that gave a housing allowance because I have my own apartment.

I'm with the "just tell them you'll do it and hide it better" crew. Seems unfair, and it is, but c'est la vie. They wanna play that game, fine, no sweat off of your back, just slip into an alleyway instead of overtly smoking in the streets... just in case.

Still, sounds like they're crazy.

its all about the school image, if you smoke while walking outside or where parents and kids see you, it could be a problem, or if youre a lady, its could be seen as a problem. if you smell like cigarettes, its not your problem, its the school problem then, becuase the kids have to smell you. alot of your k-coworkers do stuff too, but they keep it away from the workplace.

it just how it is..

this is the most ridiculous statement ive ever read on Dave's. At my last hagwon the owner and two other k-teachers would smoke in the stairwell in between classes and not even wash their hands or use mouthwash after. At my present PS the bathrooms constantly smell of cigarette smoke and i even walked in on one guy smoking in the stalls. K-teachers can get away with it, foreigners as it appears, can't

This is Korea. As with everything, the first thing you should do is say you will do whatever they say..then ignore it. You should tell them you will quit smoking and then keep on smoking. You will never hear about smoking from them again.

its not a ridiculous statement, its a ridiculous situation. "K-teachers can get away with it, foreigners as it appears, can't " Thats mostly true, it seems.
The number one mistake we foreigners think is that logic and fairness apply here:) The guy before me said, its all about "the show of" obedience. Agree and say youll try to quit and theyll grunt, chew some xylitol, and say your a handsome guy.

Just say okay and keep on smoking and when they confront you about it say "Oh I thought you meant stop smoking crack."

A teacher, in Korea, is a very respected position. Somewhere between a doctor and a Church leader.

You're expected to set an example at all times when outside your front door.

This is why it was such a scandal years ago to photograph foreign teachers at a wet T-shirt contest, and the backlash so strong. We had destroyed the image of one of Korea's sacred cows.

OP: If you want to quit anyway, then why not just suck it up now and go for it. It might have taken something like this to force you to stop anyway.

Uhhhh... I often see the male teachers smoking in front of my middle school when classes are done, and sometimes when the kids are in class. I've worked at elementary schools where the teacher kept his cigarettes in his front pocket while teaching lessons, and when he leaned over to help a student, you could see the pack there.

I don't think it's a Korean thing so much as something that your particular school has... but it could also be a huge double standard. Usually, it's because one of the parents saw you and thought 'wait, isn't that so-and-so's English teacher?', and word spread until finally someone got upset, called the school and said 'I don't think that's appropriate'. So yeah, ESL in Korea is the kind of job where one parent can have that kind of effect.

I have to admit I kind of have the same opinion as they do and whenever I occasionally feel the need for a cigarette I hide it as if it were heroin... anyway, you can just tell them 'yes' and once you sign the contract I don't think they'll go all the way to firing you if they find out you're still smoking... can you imagine the publicity that it would cause if some newspaper got a hold of the story and printed 'ESL teacher fired for smoking cigarettes'???

Apologize to them for smoking. Tell them you realize now, that only bad people smoke, that's why you've never seen a Korean person smoking. Tell them you will go to churcheee this weekend to confess your sins. Let your boss know that you will try to be a better person like all Koreans, and not smoke.

Then, proceed to carry on smoking as usual. If you get caught, put it down to a cultural misunderstanding. You thought they said give up smoking inside the classroom.

Good luck.
