They probably wont know what your talking about if you say crack,,,,,say marijuana instead.....According to koreans (and right wing religious zealots), it's just as bad.

Or maybe just stop cigs and take up cigars or say you thought they meant cigars.

Or you could try giving some cigars and cognac to your boss and see if you can come to an 'arrangement'.

Start at the VSOP level, and if takes a little more, spring for the XO.

The smoking issue is pure BS. There is something else that they don't like about you, but won't tell. If you're a man, smoking is really a non-issue in Korea.
This seems closest to the truth here... if the OP is male.
I agree the male teachers in my school smoked like chimneys always outside together smoking. I was lucky I guess seeing the posts on this board did two contracts, Korea and Asia are not very logical. Just get another job and tell them you will not renew, I always had an easy time getting a job while in Korea. Even if you don't smoke another problem will pop up that's the way the culture is.

K-teachers can get away with it, foreigners as it appears, can't

Radius hit the nail on the head. It's a double standard, as smoking is the norm, if not expected of many korean males (drinking as well) whilst not looked well upon for foreigners (read: anyone who does not look Korean).

While I realize most of the advice given so far falls under the sardonic flavor of responses they are all pretty poor ideas. I don't condone it, but trying to buck the system somewhere that you are not native to and that you have no authority or power in is not a very good idea. If you don't like them putting their cultural stigmas on you, smile, give them your two weeks, then just find another place to work. Not ALL schools here subscribe to the traditional Korean mentality fortunately.

I would tell them to sod off in a heartbeat. Typical Korean workplace mentality. Forcing you to adopt or lose habits against your will, don't eat the crappy school cafeteria food with the rest of them will make you a social leper. The more you go along with it the worse you get treated anyway - it is the law of diminishing returns - and totally not worth it.

I agree. You have to stand up for yourself in Korea. If you don't, then you've put yourself in their hierarchy - and then look out (extra unpaid duties etc).

This quit and we'll re-sign you stuff reeks of Korean 'control' issues. They're saying that they only want you if you change your life because they say so. Get stuffed. Call their bluff. If they don't re-sign you, you will lose money (getting docs together/and lost wages), but if you do stop smoking for them - you have automatically placed yourself in a very 'junior' position (with all the negative consequences that derive from this).

Case in point. I've never eaten in a PS cafeteria. I rarely eat lunch - (hardly ever except a piece of fruit). I don't especially like the food (crap and salty), the hierarichal environment (who the hell is going to tell me what to eat and when to finish eating it?), and the noisy environment (I look for peace while eating).

So my last school understands my 'special diet', no problem. Then one day I made the mistake of eating a bowl of take-out noodles with the teachers at lunch time. Two minutes later the senior male teacher says that they are now going to be deducting school lunch money from my paycheck every month - regardless of whether I eat in the cafeteria or not! Basically they hadn't understood my individual preferences about eating, they were just waiting for an opportunity to muscle me into being 'part of the group'.

Yeah. Right baby. I told him that if they made any unauthorised deductions from my salary, I'd report them to the Korean Labor Board, and that their faces would be red for 5 years. I was so angry. Never heard any more about it (and later on they wanted to re-sign me).

Point is: don't let Koreans impose their hierarchical work place structure on you. Just say no. If they don't like it, head down the Kimchi Highway. You'll feel much better for it.

Why'd you even admit to it in the first place? Foreigners all look alike, I'd go the route of "I don't know what you're talking about, smoking??" If someone brings it up again, tell them you want to see pictures, cuz this smoking guy MUST be your twin...

I don't see this as some big mind game, power grab, whatever. And even if it is, so what, you only want another 6 months. Appease them, it's not a big deal, IMO.

and DAMN YOU OCULISORBIT, I WANTED TO MAKE THE MARIJUANA JOKE! :::angrily shake fist:::

Sounds like one of your bosses are taking his personal problems out on you.
Just get a new job; they are not worth it. Tell them to kiss you A**.
If you give in then they will make more outrageous demands.
I know this from personal experience with another issue.

Shocked

I can't believe you said that. Lying isn't good and is something that never happens in Korean culture. Shocked

When I was a kid, I used to eat these candy smokes.

It had powdered sugar, so you could pretend to be smoking. Get a bunch of those and hand them out to your students Laughing

I loved those! My mom forbade me from buying them after I got my first "pack" though. I quickly moved on to red hots and everlasting gobstoppers.

I think that since you didn't pull the "it wasn't me" thing (which would've been really easy, I think), you have to say that while you appreciate their concern over your health, and that you're considering quitting smoking (if that's true), you are not required to quit smoking any more than you're required to lose weight or change your hairstyle. Be really respectful, but insist that you don't have to quit smoking.

It's hard to understand what they really want. You said you don't smoke at the school anyway, so there's no way they can prove/disprove you're smoking anyway. You can say whatever you want: you can keep smoking and say you quit, or you can quit but say you still smoke.

I guess I just assumed the OP was a guy.

Yeah... sometimes it isn't a double standard with foreigners as much as it's a man/woman thing. I haven't seen any women smoking in public since I got here... except, as was already mentioned, foreigners and prostitutes. If Korean guys see a white girl smoking in a bar, they will assume she is a Russian prostitute.

This is one of those things that isn't going to go away any time soon.

Is it just me, or it this just what we call a "non-issue".

The facts:

1) You want to renew really, really badly.
2) They are giving you an option to renew.

What you should do:

1) Say you will quit smoking.
2) See if they renew you
3) If they don't renew you, you obviously know that they weren't going to renew you anyway.
4) If they renew you, you're happy. Try to not smoke in front of anyone.

I mean you're leaving Korea anyway.

What exactly is the problem? You just said you don't want to have to go to another hagwon.

What's more important, your pride or the job? It's simple man. If it's your pride, just walk away, if it's your job, then suck it up.

If you don't smell like smoke, then just tell them you already quit. If your contract finishes in two months, they're going to want to get you under contract soon. Get the contract signed and proceed to smoke as much as you damn please.
