Hi there,
I have been teaching at a hagwon in Korea for a few months, teaching mainly elementary school children. When my contract finishes I am wanting to try and get a University job in Korea.
I was wondering if there are any people on this board with experience in this area who could possibly give me some advice.
What does a University job entail? Will I need to have an excellent knowledge of the English language? My MA is in an unrelated field so would I benifit from doing a TEFL course? What are my chances of getting a job in a city like Seoul or Busan?
Actually I would really like to hear any advice or hear from people who have experience teaching in a SK University |

1. A university job entails teaching, but at a university. As you would imagine.
2. Uh, yes. What, pray tell, did you think the answer was?
3. Yes. Having an MA is all that matters, not what kind necessarily. Some are better than others, as you could probably guess.
4. Well, Seoul and Busan hold over 50% of Korea's population, so there you go.
I apologize if this comes off as snippy, but it's spelled "benefit". Something like that would get your resume instantly garbage canned at my University. Sharpen up and you might just have some luck. |

I think you would benefit from the TESOL course. Besides gaining knowledge about language teaching, the extra credential would help improve your credibility with both those interviewing you for a position and the students you will teach. Start on it now! And go for the 120 and not the 60 hour one.
Some universities will start posting their jobs on www.tesol.org in the next few weeks, as the international TESOL conference is coming up at the end of March. It will mostly be the major universities (SNU, KAIST, Yonsei), but it's a starting point so that you can learn more about what a uni job entails and what sort of requirements/experience you need. Maybe you can find additional posts on other sites as well for some of the smaller places. |
