I started thinking recently how few top stand-up comedians are women. I've watched female comedians such as Margaret Cho and Sarah Silverman and they just didn't do it for me.

Your thoughts and suggestions?

There are some things that men are just better at than women. Being funny is one of them.

If you're a guy, try to think of 5 girls in your lifetime that you know personally that would routinely make you laugh (intentionally). Doesn't exist, really. Try to think of one. To be honest, I don't even know one girl that routinely makes me laugh through her wit, comedic expression, etc.

(Oh, but hey, I know this one girl, she's really, really funny, so stop generalizing you generalizer... wah wah wah).

i feel like this is going to turn into a flame war. but i agree, i don't find many females funny.

as far as my friends go.... i have friends that fulfill certain needs. i have friends that i go to if i want to go out drinking, i have friends to play music with, i have friends who make me laugh. my female friends are more like my therapist, they're good listeners and give good insight to certain things, but i don't go to them expecting them to make me laugh.

i do think sarah silverman is funny though. she's probably the only female stand up that i like. ellen degeneres can sometimes invoke a chortle from me but never a lol.

oh and lisa lampanelli is funny at the comedy central roasts.

A trait men require to pull a lady the ability to verbally entertain.

Women don't need to be funny/entertaining in order to attract a mate.

I've known about one woman who could make me laugh regularly, and trust me, she needed it.

I think women tend to be funnier when there's only other women around. We make a lot of jokes about private things, I think.

Women laugh at each other's stories/jokes in a "You go girl"/Oprah Audience kind of way, but trust me, men don't find it funny.

Whenever I've watched a female comedy show, I could happily bet large sums of money that they will bring up pregnancy or periods. Also breasts and other things female-specific.

Obviously guys do too but they cover everything. Females seem to CONSTANTLY cover pregnancy and periods. It's clearly still a conscious act of equality.

But yes, much less funny. Much less enjoyable to play sports with, and I feel far less relaxed to say what I want in case it offends, or goes 'too far' out of the political correctness radar. With guys if I go too far from them it can just be laughed off.

Not that women are bad. I'm not sexist, I have a girlfriend.

I really like Charlyne Yi. But she is more of a comedian in that musical performer way like Flight of The Conchords and such.
I actually am a big fan of Margaret Cho too.

I just asked my husband and he looked at me for a moment and said, "that chick with the weird voice is funny, but she's funny because she's weird." If we knew he name, you could try her. (She sounds like an awkward 9 year old boy.)

So I think men just don't get female humor all the time. There are many styles of comedy, just like their are many genres of music. It's not that women aren't funny, their style of comedy just doesn't appeal to you.

Re: vaginas, Tig Notaro had a really funny joke on The Benson Interruption about how female comedians always tell jokes about going to the gynecologist. I won't spoil it, but it was kind of gross. ^^

i find charline yi sooo annoying. she goes for that "i'm awkwardly cute" thing but it seems so fake and forced. she was realllly annoying in the at documentary "the heart is a drum machine."

Don't you think this points to a genuine distinction, though? If there are many comedians women find funny, but few comediennes men find funny, I think it's not wrong to say there's a disparity with regards to comedic capability.

Real comedic skill lies in the ability to take experiences or ideas common to your audience, reduce them to an easily-delivered abstraction, and then present that abstraction in an amusing way. If one can only do this with members of their own gender (or race, or religion, or so forth), one is decidedly less comedically capable than someone who can do it with a wider and more diverse audience.

Certain male minority comics also suffer from this kind of limitation, but at least they often make up for it to some extent through a competent and charismatic delivery. I find female comics are often stifled not just by their material, but by a terrible delivery as well.

Wow there's some really sexist attitudes that are creeping in this thread. I mean, women don't have to be funny to attract a mate?

Wow. Really?

Women are just as funny as men. That said, part of being funny is that you have to be "flawed" or differ from relative societal norms in some way. Self-degradation and harsh truths are a comedian's bread and butter. Richard Pryor smoked crack, Louie Anderson is fat, Adam Sandler is a a jokingly quasi-self-hating Jew, Margaret Cho is a lesbian, Sarah Silverman has the mind of a child, whatever. Since women are generally held in higher regard and have higher standards set upon them by society, the risks of trying to be flawed are too great for many women to try and pursue a career in comedy, as opposed to following the status quo of being as attractive (physically and in other ways) as possible.

Also, Globutron: "I'm not sexist, I have a girlfriend".

It's a sad world where people feel the need to say blatantly false things to appease the abstract principle of equality. There's nothing sexist about admitting the truth, especially regarding such a trivial matter.

"men are better athletes than women." is that a sexist statement?

there might be some truth to what blue.sky said from a social evolution perspective.

have you ever listened to a podcast called radiolab? they dissected the subject of laughter once and there is research that women often use laughter to attract a male or even use laughter as a way to calm down an aggressive male.
