How does one even find out if they are on such a list??? |
Having a friend who is a recruiter that has access and that is willing to let you know. |
What is it...some kind of database that recruiters put people's names on? And then they email each other like, "don't work with so-and-so..."?
Wow, I didn't know that actually existed. |
I've heard of them. I don't see why they wouldn't be real. I mean, we maintain lists saying "don't work with such-and-such recruiter or such-and-such school," don't we? |
The teacher blacklist is very real. It used to be open to the public to view, but now you have to become an official member (i.e. pay a membership fee) to view the list. So without paying, you can't even find out for sure if you're on it. If you're really interested, you can check it out here.
http://www.kftra.co.kr/list.asp?idx=2
The actual blacklist (or where it should be) is the last item on the top menu.
For more info on the blacklist, see this thread:

Well, well, well....if it isn't 'qcat79'. Nice to see you here. Tell me RM, how are things in the Chungnam province these days? I've made the most of my unemployment in Florida....beaches and bars. I'm just waiting for you to tell the whole world everything about your life, mine, and wiganers, like the walking grand narrative you are. But like SB in Gangnam always said, you're always talking about....well, nevermind. Congratulations on the renewal, I knew after enough years out there it would have happend with one employer sooner or later. How long 'till the F-2 visa and the baby? Dude, I miss the days at the beach in Busan back in 2007...the fun we all had, and damn do I miss those K-girls in bikinis. You can take the boy out of Florida, but you can't take Florida out of the boy. Nothing like wakeboarding in November and resume blasting a few times a week. Wish you were here. |

The one and only hogwon I ever worked at put me on a black list sometime in 2006 or 2007...I didn't learn this until 2010 through a friend who is married to a Korean recruiter. Not that I care, since most (but not all) hogwons are kinda crappy anyway.
While I left my last public school on decent terms, complete with letters of rec, I had some serious issues with a coteacher (which I vented about hear, about a year ago now). As professional as I tried to be, there was a cold war between me and this person for 10 months, and I think the whole school figured it out by the time I left --although I NEVER gossipped to other coteachers. Just kept my head down and finished my contract. I have reason to believe the school is shooting me down these days...
Long story short, I can't get a job in GEPIK to save my life. Thing is, I really want Bundang, where I was at my 3rd year. I didn't use multiple recruiters all at once, BUT I did use them one at a time as they failed to get me a GEPIK position in Bundang, one after another. Granted, one or two had some positions on the northern or southern edge of Gyeonggi province.
Is GEPIK that full of teachers? Could I be on two blacklists, or is my last public school just being wrathful? Is GEPIK and the whole entire EPIK/SMOE thing very slowly being phased out? I saw that thing about GEPIK in the Korea Times recently. Truth be told this is about my 3rd or 4th choice type of gig and 3rd or 4th choice location. Damn. (On the top would be 5-6 hour long afternoon hogwons like 2/3-8/9, 12-6 after school programs, private public schools with mucho time off...and of course colleges; preferabbly in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan or Gwangju. That's right, I said Gwangju.)
Yeah, there are jobs still out there in Korea....but mostly 9-6 kindies, 1-9/2-10 franchise elem hogwons, and rural public schools. Tight, tight, tight....but not saturated. |
Interesting. The hogwans belong to the Hogwan Association. I can understand how they would blacklist you in a region. But to be black listed by GEPIK, EPIK, and SMOE is unrelated to this (unless they hate you enough to pay big bribes). Please remember that Korean public schools don't want "veteran" teachers right now. This may also factor into your inability to find a public school job. Honestly, I would look at another country if I were you. But searching here for a couple of months would be useful before leaving the country. Don't accept garbage positions. Have fun and take care. |

As far as I know, it's not a hogwon association. It's more of a recruiter association. At least that's who maintains the well known blacklist. BUT it's illegal in a way for them to do this. As far as I understand though, it's not illegal for a single employer to maintain a list of former employees (good and bad). I've heard that EPIK and the like DO keep lists of former teachers and complaints against them. Apparently (as I've been told) it's not illegal because they are one employer/recruiter/entity and not sharing that info with other people. It's what I've heard. I can't confirm it, so take it with a grain of salt. |

the provincial life??? well, it is what it is, but how can one complain when one has over 8 weeks off just in the winter vacation alone??? but you know, some people would rather work 51 weeks of the year for the same pay or just 100,000 won more a month. not me.
i noticed how you mentioned beaches and bars, but not babes.....how is the florida cellulite these days, bcj? |

and folks,
let's not get confused on the meaning of bcj's term, "unemployment". it isn't THE paycheck he's receiving weekly or monthly from the government as most americans might suspect from the way he wrote it, but his only and true meaning of the word outright.....UNEMPLOYMENT.
bcj, a few more days and you will have hit the 4 month mark, right? maybe it calls for a celebration of sorts.
and i don't know who this SB person in gangnam is who you're talking about, but SA in gangnam says (and i paraphrase):
"while ___ is bragging about making $2,000 in the market while back in america, i have made $12,000 in that same time frame alone just by keeping my job." (and mind you, this was a month ago when he said that) |

That's funny, qcat79/RM.
I remember how cheap you were back in the Busan Days of 2007. Getting out of taxi hundreds of yards before the apartment we both lived in to save 100 won. Walking from Heyundae beach to Jangsan cause you didn't want to pay 1800 won on a taxi. Never buying new clothes. Buying the cheapest, crappiest Korean food you could find.
There are things more important than making the big bucks in Korea. How about spending the holidays with your family on US soil? Feels good, I must admit.
Anyway, last time I checked, I have an interview for a decent looking management position stateside. As for the money situation...I had an uncle die half a year ago, and after legal services and some waiting time, got about a cool $50,000. Funny how life works out.
Enjoy your second year in Asan. |

look who's the big man....
......bragging about getting a cut of inheritance are you??? you obviously know nothing about the value of money, or time spent working for it or how to spend it wisely. i mean, the only debt you only knew was $5,000 on your credit card. let everyone know on here that it was your parents that paid for your college education, you spoiled brat.
but just like most lottery winners in america, we'll see how far that $50k goes (assuming you really did get it).
why don't you tell the nice folks on dave's how i used my savings from 2007 and took TWO vacations to thailand, spent another TWO months back home and actually passed my CELTA in the meantime.
shall we enlighten everyone about your 4 week experience in prague? |

@qcat79
Grandparents paid for college. Like you know everything about me RM. What is this "Prague experience" you're talking about? RM, you need to know before you go and actually do your research on vacation destinations before you travel, so you won't end up in a hotel eating pringles or walking in parks taking pictures of people in front of cafes off in the distance whilst eating the cheapest food you can get, like you did every time you went to China and southeast Asia. You have quite an eye for photography...and by that I mean really, you don't.
I'm making something of my life back in the homeland, and you're jealous. Forida: the California of the East Coast. You're missing out, RM. I'm looking forward to working in the private sector again, and gaining some more management experience. Turning 30 never felt so good -- I feel like Aari Gold from 'Entourage.' At least robots can never outsource leadership and hardwork.
Thinking about buying a Nissan Juke or a Kia Soul next week. That's the car to cruise in from St Pete to Ybor, right here in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Want to fly back and help me choose the color? :p |

no, i don't enjoy pringles. actually, i'm more of a foodie than you'd ever be. every had real chinese food??? last time you told me, you were hunkering down in mcdonald's in beijing.....talking about travelling skills.
i mean the prague experience where you failed your CELTA on the third week and lounged around in your dorm room until the end of week four....THAT PRAGUE EXPERIENCE. so pathetic.
buying a new car are ya?? like i said, go through that inheritance. you deserve it.
we'll see how long you last in a management position at some shoe store, al bundy. |
