When I remember back to sex education in high school back in the early '90s I remember all the anti-sex talk. Basically it was such fear mongering about getting AIDS.
So it was officially I guess to educate us about the risks of AIDS. But it seemed to overstate things to scare us out of having sex.
======
Now that I think about it I remember another scared-straight idea about drugs. It was so extreme. Like using pot, you'll become (more) stupid, and get start using herion, then you'll be on the streets.

Such crap how the government scares kids.
I guess I don't have any questions, just thought I'd throw that topic out there! |

I remember my school brought some army guy in to talk about all aspects of life, and to get us to join the army. He showed us pictures of how pot clogs up your brain. I wasn't really inclined to believe anything he said. |

I remember the anti-abortion videos they used to show us. It was a shame because the sex-ed we received was fairly liberal about contraceptives. But, abortion, oh boy!
I also remember a police officer bringing in handmade weapons to show around, and another officer came in and handed around drugs(although they were probably just mock-ups). I still have no idea how this was going to deter us, show a twelve year old boy a kosh made from a tube train passenger handgrip and see their reaction. I seriously think the police were just showing off. |

we had a sex ed class in 7th grade PE class and they were discussing venereal diseases. some boy, esteban, threw up when they showed the slides. after that, he was always known as the kid who threw up during sex ed class.
i remember seeing a scared straight special on mtv where they had these juvenile kids go into a real prison and at one point, some big tough black inmate who was presenting the seminar had some scared white suburban kid hold the inside of his pocket and follow him around and i think the black guy even said something to the effect of "you my bitch." that was more comical than anything else. |

I think Prison Break must be a parody of the "Scared Straight" show. "Scared Straight" was a real documentary where a bunch of smart ass kids are sent to visit some tough guys in prison who... try to scare them straight:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scared_Straight!
I remember Beavis and Butthead did a parody where they got sent to a scared straight thing, and they ended up really wanting to go to prison because they thought the guys were super cool...
Anyway, do you remember PSA's? Do you think they ever dissuade kids from doing bad stuff? Here are the best Canadian ones from the 90's...

Never mind what will happen when the nuclear bomb drops on you.
Quote: |
"Run to the shelters children, when you hear the siren. Leave your mommy and daddy behind, don't think about them.
Unless you stick your head under the ground, the flash will blind you immediately- even if you are 1000 miles away.
When it hits, it burns you alive at a temperature 1000,000 times hotter than a boiling kettle. It is called radiation, and lasts for days. if you survive, maybe you will have 10 heads.
Even in the shelter you don't really have protection from radiation. In fact nothing protects you from it. First your skin peels off then you ooze blood from every pore. Then you die in excruciating agony. Unless you eat the right brand of petfood.
If anyone knows of anybody suspicious who is maybe russian, or drinks lots of vodka, please report them to a teacher or policeman.
Now everyone take notes as we watch 'when the wind blows".
Thats all for today. Sleep well kids, don't have nightmares." |

I grew up in a rather progressive/liberal area (the SF Bay Area) so we weren't exactly scared straight. Our "health" instructor in 8th grade basically told us pot was less harmful than alcohol and you shouldn't have any qualms using it. The only downside was habitual use killed your motivation.
In regards to sex ed, I just remember our teacher handing out condoms and telling us to blow them up as ballons then saying, "So ladies, if any man tells you he's too large for one, you know he's full of it." |

Insane. Insane. Insane.
North Americans, you do know you're insane, don't you? Do you? Not that I'm judging a whole continent by a few crazy stories, except I am because, where I come from, people just. wouldn't. do. things. like. that.
(Now wait for someone to dig up some crazy stories from the UK) |

I think it means Brits aren't prudish and silly about normal, natural stuff, like going down on a women when she's mensturating. |
