hmmm i interviewed with manpal a year ago...
i have to disagree with some of the posters, he was professional and gave more than one word email responses.
it was a phone interview, maybe it would have been different if i saw him in person.
as for working for gangnam district, i had a friend that worked there and they work you HARD. they give you a lotta crap about not wanting to do extra work; they almost make it a requirement to do so. needless to say, he didn't re-sign and is now happily working for SMOE (not gangnam but another district) |

Things might have changed. I got the one word email two years ago.
When I worked for them, things were a cake walk. I taught 22 hours, 4 different lessons a week, first and second graders. very easy. Biggest problem was the camp that we had to do in the winter. That and the lesson plans, those were a pain. |

Depends on the school. I work for Gangnam also. I'm pretty lucky in that my school gives me almost total autonomy over my lessons, my class, and my schedule. They also gave me my own room to teach in, without a coteacher.
24 classes a week is pretty demanding though. The pay is good and the only times the Manpal or others at the district contact me is if there is some workshop I have to attend
I heard next year SMOE will take over control over high schools in Gangnam. |

As Pkang says, it depends on the school. I only have 17 classes a week and have complete control over what I teach (no curriculum to follow). That could be plus or bonus depending on whether you like creating your own lessons - personally I love it.
The money really is good - and 100k raise every year makes a difference. The rent subsidy is now 900k which is pretty good - if you avoid officetels and look at villas then you'll find something good (although usually unfurnished) in Gangnam. |

Im not sure about all teachers but the 5-10 i know well enough who work with me in gangnam get
2.5-2.9 salary
6 weeks vacation (depending on school sometimes upto 8 weeks)
0.9 housing

some get their own classroom ( i do) but some move around, depends again on the school,

I've applied for a job, but the ad said up to 25 classes per week. Do they pay OT after 22? It sounds like they expect a lot from the teachers, which might be tough as I'm currently studying for an MSc in TESOL.
Any tips for the interview? What can I expect etc? |

my pay is 2.6 (majored in English lit and have a secondary teaching certificate with five years of teaching experience).
and if you are hired within korea, they give you a 700.000 won reimbursement at the end of your contract. (like the price of half of your ticket to home and back)
as for housing, i am getting an allowance of 350.000 (they just increased it to 500.000) which isn't enough to get a decent room in gangnam area. ( i live in gwanjin-gu, across the river) you can get an officetel/oneroon instead, but i don't know what they are like, since i have never seen the ones they offer.
the students' levels vary....which is a bit hard. i have some students who have lived abroad and are fluent, while i have some who don't even know the basics. teaching and appealing to all the students is hard. i try to meet the middle groud, but i always get students who either have confused looks on their faces or those with looks of boredom. this is my biggest concern as a teacher.
as for private teaching...i haven't had any offers for privates. currently i am not doing any outside work. under contract we're not supposed to do any outside work and i am just happy with what i have now.
there was a job post on daves esl just last week for the upcoming semester, i think. if you are interested, go for an interview. |
wow, you're only getting 500,000 for housing these days? when i was there (during the re-contracting period in 2009), they changed it from free housing to 900,000 won (per month). you could still afford to live in gangnam and maybe pay an extra 100,000 on your own, but 500,000??? damn. |

24 is the contract standard now? or do you get paid overtime for those extra 2? |

I heard that the foreign teachers don't receive their own classroom. That's a serious negative in my opinion. |
when i was there in 2009, they were in the process of building the english classrooms in the school. so for half the year, i didn't have my own, then the other half i did. it really depends on the school you're at......same thing with vacation. 4 weeks is standard, but if you're good with your superiors, you could get more. |

I have an upcoming interview with Manpal this week. Can anyone give me some insight into the hiring process and the types of interview questions he asks?
After the interview with him, what's the next step? Anyone know? |
