One of our teachers had to leave our PS for medical reasons and they asked me to find a replacement for her. Where to start?

Compile a list of recruiters and hand them to your boss. Finished.

Will you get extra pay for that? A finder's fee? I mean, your job is to teach not to recruit, right?

If you "want" to do it, then that's another story.

Still, you can be nice and give them Dave's ESL Cafe's web site URL and a few others, then you can tell them you did the best you could since you're a teacher not a recruiter.

Im doing it because the task got deligated down to one of my coteachers and I don't mind helping her. Its a pretty good situation and most people would love to have this job. So, I am aiming for people already in Korea because then I don't have to deal with all this flight stuff.

Gepik used to give 100K, but I never checked the current contract.

You'll still likely have to pay them something in lieu of a flight. Otherwise, unless they're on an F visa, they'll just go back home for a vacation and let the next school pay for a flight over.

100k is pretty weak considering how much they pay the recruiter. Especially if I could bring in someone they could meet before they hire them. Both parties could check it out. But im doing it for free anyway.

Im not too worried about the flight money, but more about them never getting on the plane. Seems more secure. Also, this is a pretty sweet gig as far as public schools go. So, if they offered to pay for a visa run to Japan, most people would jump at that if they didn't have a uni gig waiting.

If you're already in Korea and can do a visa run, you can get a lot better offers than normal. Plus, as you mentioned, they can check out the school first. The down side is that if you do end up with a shady school there is nothing really stopping them from canning you in an instant. If they didn't pay to bring you over, they lose nothing by firing you on the spot. Some schools invest a lot in the school itself but not the employees. They look good at first. Then you get to know the boss and you see the other side of things.

Be sure to ALSO give the job applicants a reference from a previous teacher. References from current teachers are not so reliable. Sometimes schools give the current teacher a lot of pressure (e.g. threats) to find their replacement.

In case you don't already know this... recruiters get between 1.0 to 1.5 million Won per teacher. Considering those savings, I'm sure that your school could spring for a few paid averts on Dave's.

Still, good luck with it. I'm sure you'll get someone.

There is always a risk when taking a job that you wont like it. I would much rather stop in, check out the place, talk to the teachers (candidly), maybe even see a class, etc. Than just get an email from someone explaining these things. Also, this is a public school gig, so it is a lot less shady than most hogwans (not that there aren't poorly run public schools out there).

It isn't my replacement. I just wrote that in the title because I assumed that would be the case of the majority of these situations. I will still be there, working with this person. Also, I don't really have to do this, but I see it as a win-win. I work with a sane person, I help out my busy co teacher.

I know, it would be nice to get a finder's fee. Luckily for the school, I am desk warming so I have nothing better to do.

True. And this is a big benefit of finding a job while in country. The school should still give something in lieu of airfare. The teacher didn't just arrive here by magic. They either bought or worked for their plane ticket over.

I wasn't suggesting that you ask for a fee. I've also helped some of my previous employers to find my replacement. If my boss is a decent fellow, I don't mind helping out either. What I was suggesting was that for the amount of money they they will be saving, they could afford to spend a bit on placing a few announcement on the main job boards. Posts made directly by schools will get a lot more applicants than using a recruiter will. Post are very cheap anyway. If you want to get more applicants, suggest this to your boss. You can even help him write the announcement.

I would never help my old boss. In fact, when I quit,. it was obvious that they found the next 'things" on there own terms( I would have never even glanced at such a person). It wouldn't have even the parent;s intial and first reaction, but I mean little children don't need to be looking at a drug thug day in and day out. Shocked
Sometimes I wonder if that was all they could find
