If all the last 3 years have been terrible for music...maybe you've just hit the wall where you don't like new music so much. it happens to 90% of people around the age of 29. Seriously. I think the age is variable but thinking that whole 3 year blocks have been terrible for music is definitely cantankerous old man sounding.
I thought the last 3 years have been pretty good, just because there is such a great mix of music out there on the net. Especially in hip hop..record companies and their bs have become less important which is always good. The rise of the mixtape has been a boon for the hip hop fan. |
Well I'm 26 and I think that starting in the mid-late '90's, (mainstream) music started to suck harder and harder with each year until it's snowballed into a massive avalanche of s*!t.
See, there might be some good new music on the net, but each decade has its defining sounds that people think about when they look back on that decade. When people look back on this decade, they'll think of Kesha, Beyonce, Trey Songz and garbage like that. When you think back to the '80's mainstream music, good stuff like Phil Collins comes to mind.
As for hip-hop, maybe there's some good new songs on the net, but the mainstream stuff is basically just garbage designed for dumb chicks. Drake? Where the hell did that muppet come from? I remember when Scarface and guys like him were the main people in rap.
The only mainstream music to come out recently that I think is good, is K-pop. |

GOOD like phil collins. The very man who is constantly massively criticized for quitting genesis for poppy crap.
Kesha? maybe 2009-2010. Not the decade. |

I like phil collins. I'm just the messenger.
THough I wouldn't think of him when I think of the 80's...Genesis for sure... A far superior form of music. |

But, if you are 26 that means you were only 16 when the 90s ended! I cannot believe your taste in music was cemented by the time you were 16. I'm around the same age( a year older actually) and most of my favorite music is from this decade. I like some 90s stuff but it is mostly stuff my older brothers and sisters liked. I can't believe you were independently listening to scarface when you were like 13. How could you even appreciate him at that age. I was not very mature at that age...basically I obsessively listened to stuff my older brother liked because i idolized him.
Scarface did release albums this decade too including what I'd consider a classic 'The Fix'. check it out. Hip Hop is good right now for me because artists are releasing alot of independent material in mixtapes. I'd consider a few mix tapes as among my fave records of the decade.
Anyway, it is very hard to find defining sounds for this decade because music is so splintered. For me this is a good thing because there is such a wealth of material online. But...if I had to name an artist of the decade it would be Kanye West. 2 or 3 classic albums and a host of beats made for some of the biggest hits of the decade. His sound defined hip hop for much of the decade.
edit: i personally don't like phil collins but I'm absolutely sure there is similar music being made now. Maybe 80s pop is coming back..who knows. |

Somebody sure likes NPR. (I'm guilty too, really dig all of these)
I'll have to add Jonsi (from Sigur Ros) to the mix. Love Go. Also, the Black Keys mention, class.
I think music might be getting better actually. Every year can't produce an epic but quality music is there. Because of the internet, finally the power is in the musicians' hands to make anything they want. |

| Hey is the Yogi Bear movie out in Korea yet? I just saw it and it was hilarious. Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake play the bears and it was a lot of fun to watch. You people should go and see it if it's out, I guarantee that you're in for a giggle or two. |

Here is an awesome 2010 release I just came across, the first single for Awolnation, called "Sail": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYz_e4vuixQ&feature=related
The first half is fantastic and it could have been a classic if the back end wasn't so minimalistic. But, then again, hearing a few other of this band's offerings, I hear their sound is definitively atmospheric.
And PS22 Chorus, the kids who closed out this year's Oscars, nails MGMT's "Kids": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or3_5QMrAds |
