And who allowed this to happen? It really bugs me.
That is all.[/i] |

maybe because it's easier to type in caps as emphasis than to use italics |

This.
And italics still mean emphasis, but a more reserved form of emphasis.
CAPS MEAN I AM SHOUTING AT YOU AND AM NO LONGER TRYING TO BE PROPER AND POLITE. |

Right, CAPS means shouting. I'm fine with that. But there is a lot of use of CAPS on the internet where the user doesn't mean to shout but just put stress on a word.
By the way what does that big-as*ed acronym above mean? |

Probably when older people who grew up on typewriters started using computers, because on typewriters the only way to EMPHASIZE was to use caps, or go back and underline, which took longer. In their defense, some of these were people who could type 75+ words per minute with no mistakes. On manual typewriters. (Children, that means typewriters that didn't use electricity. Oh, and a typewriter was a machine that allowed you to make documents without a printer or a pen. I think there are a few left in museums.) |

When did italics replace caps to imply emphasis?
Daskalos is right. CAPS were used to imply emphasis back in the day of the typewriter, but now are used for acronyms like EPIK. CAPS never replaced italics, it's the other way around. Boldface is good way to imply emphasis such as for listing items for sale and other bullet pointing. CAPS are just a terrible idea if it isn't an acronym.

IT'S RUDE AND CONDESCENDING TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS, BECAUSE IT'S SO ANNOYING TO READ SO DON'T DO IT. |
