!4 minutes gone in the second half and its 0-0... so much for a blow out by Korea. Not looking good for the coach, when their full world cup squad struggles to score on a minnow like the Maldives |

watched the game and I loved it. Korea got booked twice for dissent, then for flopping in the box which they were doing the entire second half.
Ahn had 2 goals called back, one for an obvious handball and one for offside, he was b*tching the entire time. What a wuss.
Yeah Maldives played some good defense but Korea looked pathetic
This team hasn't scored in how long?
Coehlo is now toast... |

"Disgrace" and "90 minutes of shame!" was the Korean press reaction.
In footballing terms the Maldives were equal to what we would call in Britain a "Sunday League" team. They only had about three players in the team capable of controlling and passing the ball to a professional (let alone international) level.
It'll teach Korea some humility and the wisdom of Graham Taylor's sage words. As he once so splendidly said after an England debacle: "There are no easy games in international football." It's true. |

It's worrying that there is absolutely no decent striking talent available in Korea these days...
Hiddink dumped Kim Do-Hoon from his World Cup squad because he was 'too old', and the season after that he went out and banged in 27 goals in the Korean league. He got recalled by Coehlo for a couple of games in Asian Cup qualifiers, scored eight goals, and then was dumped again because he wasn't 'one for the future'. Choi Yong-Soo, despite having a good domestic record in Korea and Japan, never did it for the national team and he too was binned.
Last night they started with Jong Kyeong-Ho, Ahn Jung-Hwan and Seol Ki-Hyeon up-front - 25 goals between them in 92 internationals.
The squad for the game had 46 goals between them in their 485 combined caps.
Almost every K-League team relies on foreign strikers and it's hard to see where the next generation of Korean strikers are going to develop in a competitive environment until the KFA get their erses in gear and fully expand the K-League and K-2 league... |

The annoucers were the best. If you could follow the Korean. Before the game they said 'The Muldives must feel very honoured to be playing the 4th place team from the 2002 World Cup.'

That's funny! Still, history hasn't been kind to those teams which finished 4th in a world cup. Look at England (90) Bulgaria (94) and, Croatia (9 . In their respective subsequent world cups England failed to even qualify, while Bulgaria and Croatia both went out in the 1st round. If South Korea qualify for Germany 2006, I don't expect them to buck this trend. |

both of who are goal hogs, particulary Mr Ahn. Ive seen them both pass up opportunities for the team to score by passing it off, while having a wayward shot at goal.... maybe they're too concerned about how much they will earn on their next contract, so need to have some more impressive stats |

Yes, we (England) knocked them out in the last 16. A superb David Platt volley in the final moments of the game if I remember correctly. Even if you want to go back that far, Belguim still didn't match their achievements from Mexico 86. Indeed, they have never matched that feat since. I can't name a world class player who wears the Belguim shirt now. Certainly not comparable to players like Scifo, Staelens, and Ceulimans(spelling??). Mpenza has the potential, but it seems as though his attitude isn't in the right place. And as far as the Korean national side is concerned, there is certainly a lack of class there. Away from their partizan fans, I don't see how they constitute a threat. With or without Hiddink, it was only going to be downhill from the summer of 2002. |

Yeah...I was going for the maldives.
I think i could take a better shot them most of the Korean players. There was not much thinking, just continually just lobbing the ball in and shooting.
To be honest i didn't know they had enough grass on maldives to make a soccer pitch, maybe they shipped it from Sri lanka.
Now if Maldives make the World Cup...that would be a story. |
