I'm from Seattle. I lived in Seoul for two years, but I left Korea and moved back to Seattle about six months ago. |

I grew up in that area! I also lived there in the 5 months prior to moving to Korea. Maybe we know each other? You should pm me!
I lived in Portland, OR for about four years, as well. |

Not so much. Very different climate. Korea is more climatically similar to the US Midwest. Daegu's weather is roughly comparable to St. Louis or Cincinnati/Louisville with Seoul being a little more like Chicago or Cleveland. Hot, humid summers and very cold, dry winters. Korea is hilly though, so you can go hiking and stuff.
If you want milder winter weather, go to the southern part of Korea, like Busan. |

Bellingham and Portland, OR. You'll miss the NW weather. Clean and refreshing NW rains have nothin' on the polluted, steamy downpours we get in the summers here Just kidding. Life in Korea is great! |

I'm from Oregon... I do miss the weather/environment/hiking trails, etc. But it's fun here too. I'll hopefully go back home in another 1.5 years. |

I think there will be more people from Tacoma in the Tacoma area than in Korea. You may need to socialise a bit with Korean natives and other people from outside Tacoma. It can be tough, but I managed it! |

Not from the area but . . .
I remember I spent a few days in Seattle. I wanted to check out the area, possibly move there. When I was looking out the airplane window, I thought, "Crud! Wow, it's so green from all the rain. It looks like a big golf course." Then I looked closer; I was looking at a golf course.
I had mixed feelings about Seattle. My hotel was around some shady area. It was the strip where that serial killer picked up the prostitutes. I remember leaving my hotel just to cross the street to pick something up at a gas station. I had three different people approach me for spare change.
But I will say, there's some pretty damn good clam chowder there. (Not at the gas station but in Seattle.) |

Ted Bundy? Why would you stay in a place where Ted Bundy picked up prostitutes? You probably should have stayed in a nicer place... |

hahaha!
I guess to dumb down the post I made earlier- [not directed at you, axe of redness] why would you move to nigh on the other side of the world just to seek out people from your hometown or other close place?
To me one of the main rewards of being here is meeting and making friends with the locals. They can be quite nice. |

The hotel and the area looked o.k. on the internet, but, yeah, sometimes you get what you pay for. It wasn't until a couple years later that I found out about The Green River Killer. Given the area, I wasn't really surprised. |

I can assure you that nowhere in Korea is anything like the Seattle region....and certainly not Daegu.
If you're seriously concerned about meeting people in Korea who are from your hometown or environs then you could be in for a long year. Then again, it sounds like this could also be the step out of your cocoon that you obviously need.
Anyhow...good luck on your adventure...but the moment you step onto that plane you need to prepare yourself for the fact that your life in Korea will be NOTHING like your life at home....then again, Korea 2011 is a much easier place to live in than Korea 2005.
Go Seahawks! |
