Just curious, has anyone here lied about your resume? I seriously doubt that these hagwons check up on your previous employers in your home countries so wouldn't it be easy to list fake job experiences on your resume? That way you can bargain for a little higher salary. Any thoughts?

Of course you should lie. You should also scan your transcripts and degree, then alter them in Photoshop. You should also try to have sex with all your female students.

Given how prominent it is for people to "embellish" their resumes, I don't think this is a troll thread, and does deserve consideration.

The job market, especially in America, is such that any little advantage helps. Obviously from a moral view, it is wrong to embellish your resume. But there are strong arguments for doing it if you can get away with it. Generally, it isn't good for the work force as a whole, but I can certainly understand why people do it.

Bend and stretch the truth to breaking point..... it is expected nowadays.

If you could do something say you've done it....

Of course - getting caught lying is embarassing and you should make sure you can't get caught out.

Don't make it easy to check up on stuff. Don't give the phone numbers of previous employers if you have exagerated...steer them to the folks who'll give you a glowing reference...

Seriously - it's basics.

A new breed of interview rigmarole now involves you having to demonstrate your competences. 'At what time did your leadership prove of benefit to the company....'

This is designed to weed out the liars...but they don't seem to work as they are too hard for most applicants to perform and for the hirers to administer in my experience.

In Korea lying is everywhere like kimchi. Trying to use western standards of openess and integrity here is folly.

I even go so far as to say if you need a degree cert you should buy one....if all they need is the paperwork - why not?

Skarp, exactly what i was thinking.

I wouldn't lie about my resume in America because something can definately go wrong. However, in Korea i can state that i had teaching experience back home (when i actually had none) or whatever they want to hear and get away with it because the interviews are a joke. Hey, it could be the difference maker in getting a couple extra hundred thousdand won in your salary. Just a thought.

I just can't get over the fact that I have had 12 jobs in the past 10 years (since the middle of high school), experience teaching in a college in the US, experience in Korea...all that, and all the experience my coworkers also have...but nonetheless, our boss is working his first job ever at age 30 and gets more pay and respect than us...

Lately there have been a few posts like this, from altering a diploma to a higher one, falsified documents, and padded resumes. I know that this goes on everywhere (recently some teachers in Georgia were found out having online degrees that weren't right).

Personally I really don't like the idea of altering facts. Everyone will present themselves in their best light, but should stick to facts. If you don't have the qualifications, get them. Hopefully the old proverb "what comes around goes around" will come into play and you will be found out, fired and replaced with a more honest candidate.

Just hope your doctor or auto mechanic didn't fake their credentials to get a little higher pay.

Altering, falsifying and forgering C.V's and Resumes is a crime, most importantly you're deceiving yourself. How can you live with yourself?

Loose use of the word crime.....

I have never lied on a cv or similar. I have stretched truth to the limit more than once and usually to some advantage. In this job I played down my skills and experience because I didn't want to seem to arrogant to fit into the team. Still got the top of the (stingy) pay scale.

It is up to the hirer to verify facts and if they are unwilling to then it's their funeral.

There is more risk lying when you are after a long term career post with benefits - these could be lost if you were caught out.

But for a one year hogwan gig - please.

Cheating is an awesome idea. I am under thirty, and I put down that I have twenty years teaching experience. They gave me 3.5 million for 10 hours per week.
