Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction in terms of finding a really good book for a student. This will be on the structure of writing stories. She has good ideas, but having difficulty in forming sentences that make sense to the general populace. Her writing tends to be in the form a korean would write it, but just translated into English.

"Simple steps to writing" is a good series for paragraph construction and flow.

Is this a grammar problem then? I'm not sure what you mean by 'the form a korean would write it'...

He might be talking about sentence structure.

Example:

English: Pronoun+verb+noun

Korean: Pronoun+noun+verb

That's my take on it.

I could recommend a few good writing books, but without knowing the specific difficulties your student is trying to overcome, they might not be what she needs.

I really enjoy my Self-Editing for Fiction Writers book, because even though it's approaching novel writing from the far end of things, it does a good job of deconstructing the process from an editing standpoint-- which can be just as helpful when you're first starting out writing, too!

What level of English proficiency does she have? Has she read a lot of English-language novels? Maybe just reading more novels in English could help her grasp the style/grammar points more easily.

Go with authors that have a nice straightforward writing style, I would think.

Someone made a recommendation thread here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/teacher/viewtopic.php?t=666

And if you want to start with short stories, I found this: http://www.yourdictionary.com/esl/short-stories.html

This is just what I found from a cursory "adult esl novel" Google search (er, safemode ON, I think), but I'm sure you can turn up more with a bit of digging. Good luck!
