You can jump on the PanStar Ferry from Busan to Osaka for about 125,000 won and not bother about expensive rail passes. Go to Kyoto, Takayama, do a day or two from there like to Shirakawago, get over to Tokyo and check out the surrounding areas.

Most expensive thing about Japan is the travel costs, cheapish accommodation can be found, especially in the smaller places.

Check out the Osaka to Shanghai ferry, takes 3 days.

You're starting in Japan? There goes your money.

I know what you mean. That is why I want to go to Japan first, so I know I can afford it. I've wanted to go to Japan since I've been a little kid. It is on the top of the list for me. That is also why I'm doing the most research on a frugal trip there compared to the other countries I want to go to.

Thanks! Like I said I have all the time in the world so if it means saving money I can take long, slow transportation in my journeys to save money. That bus pass I posted the link to looks like a great deal. I'll check out that ferry from Osaka to Shanghai.

It seems like you are making your own "Amazing Race" adventure of a lifetime. Couchsurfing is awesome!!^^ Unfortunately my wife was not into it at all. Next best option is a clean hostel where you can meet foreigners.

If you are leaving from Korea use tourcabin.com to get plane tickets and reasonable tour packages. USe a Korean Translator.

Use tripadvisor.com for reviews of different attractions and accomodations
Be careful of the exchange rates and plan to spend a lot in JAPAN and ENGLAND. I thought England was not so great (rude, unhelpful attitude towards tourists, ripoff prices) At least Japanese will rip you off but still bow to you.

Ideas for Europe travel:
Stay more days in Italy at least a week. Italy was the best.
In Europe use Ryanair.com as the cheapest if you do not carry a lot of luggage or want to check in 1-2 bags. momondo.com has very good airline rates. cheapostay.com is an excellent website to find decent accomodations if couchsurfing or crashpadder.com is not working out for you. http://segye.isic.co.kr/indexNew.jsp has some good packages from Frankfurt but you need to read Korean.

Purchase a money pouch or belt or 2 before you go.
Please tell me about each day.

Get more ideas from the travel books from each country.

I have more travel advice and information but I will tell you later.

I will complete my contract in June 2011 at which point I plan on taking a sabbatical around Asia (and perhaps beyond). I have $15,000 USD to spend and all the time in the world. I plan on traveling for at least 6 months, maybe longer. I'm a frugal traveler (I stay in hostels and use couchsurfing and I don't blow my money on souvenirs etc). I want to do it as cheap as possible so I can see as much of the world as possible. I have a fair bit of travel experience already.

I have not read the replies yet but my suggestion is to get a round-the-world ticket and focus on the cheap places. You might be able to make that $15,000 last for a full year (RTW tickets can be scheduled for a whole year in length) with the spending habits you say you have.

Adding South America to your RTW ticket usually makes it a lot more expensive but Chile's cost of living is pretty good, Argentina is still okay outside of the capital. I would go around the equator since that's where the cheaper countries congregate. Egypt, India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, or whatever interests you. You can have a full year without a winter.

Also consider learning Esperanto and traveling with the Pasporto Servo (kind of like Couchsurfing but the people will be friendlier and more giving). That's the best way to travel Europe.
