Does anyone know the best place to go for a night out in Daejeon? Is there an area where the bars are all grouped together (ish)?

Dunsan-dong(aka Time World). Where you can go out and meet all your foreigner friends.

I don't go out anymore due to my age, but JRock and Water Melon Sugars used to be the place to go for foreigners. JRock was especially popular since it was owned by a foreign due and his girlfriend (actually his GF owned it and he DJed there. They are both in Eunang dong (the old downtown)

If you know the area, look for the Galleria department store and JRocks is opposite it down one of the side streets about a block. If you are not familiar with the area, look for the pedestrian shopping area then just ask someone and they should be able to give directions. Or take a taxi. There are also other bars in the area that used to be popular with foreigners, but like I said, I don't go out anymore, so no promises.

A word of warning: A lot of off duty prostitutes hang out at these places so be careful who you get mixed up with.

I've had some good experiences in Dunsan-Dong. Say to the taxi driver "Timeworld-uh Dunsan Dong Galeria." Walk across the busy crosswalk by the coffeeshop and you're there.

I currently live in Daejeon. A lot of the foreigners go off Yellow Taxi, Santa Claus, and Sponge in Dunsan-Dong.

There is over 100 foreigners in the "Daejeon Peeps" group on FB. They usually post plans for things happening around Daejeon.

The problem is Daejon is schizophrenic. Mean it is not just one big night time spot it is three. For such a small city it is weird. I mean I can understand many big spots for a large city like Seoul. Well for Daejeon you have three areas. Does not make for bar hooping easy or cheap. You find you might have to end up spend about 8000 or more won on a taxi to move the party.

The areas are

Dunsan-Dong (New downtown)- Sponge, Jinny's Yellow Taxi, Lucky Strike and the the picnic table outside the GS-mart. Near Time World Department Store.

Eunhang-dong (Old Downtown) Watermelon Sugar, Brickhouse, J-Rock. Near but not close to the Main Train Station. Just say "Eunhang-dong" to the taxi driver.

Gun-Dong/Yusong (University Area) - Santa Claus /Shisha House. This one is a little hard. I usually say " Goon-Dong Nonk-Hyup" The driver will let you off a block or two near Santa's and Shisha House.

I'm heading into Daejeon on a Friday. First time there. Going to meet a friend to hang out and have some drinks. Would quite like some western (hip-hop) music to dance to at some point, what area do you guys recommend ("Timeworld-uh Dunsan Dong Galeria?)?

I'll be taking the KTX to Daejeon Station (right, I think?). Are there any reasonable motels in that area (not too shabby, under 60k, at least a decent tv/movies)?

Any nice/famous/decent universities in that area that are nice (to walk around, go for a stroll in)?

The most famous universities in Daejeon are KAIST and Chungnam National University. They are not exactly in Dunsandong, but at least it's the same side of the city. They are on each side of Gun-Dong, which is why the previous poster called it the university area. KAIST probably have the nicest campus, it's big and open. Probably a 5000 won taxi ride from Dunsandong.

I don't really go out much these days, so I can't tell who are playing Hip Hop music, but be aware that there are not many places to dance. But Dunsandong is probably your best bet.
