I'm eating a lot of peanuts, cashews, dairy, vegetables, and seafood.

Atkins is about being on a very low carb diet. It's not healthy in the long term, but for a month or two it's okay, as long as you keep everything in moderation, make sure to drink a lot of water, and not overdo it with the meat. Many people go on atkins and think it's a free pass to eat a load of bacon.

The only thing I'm craving a lot of is mandarin oranges. I could have one, but it's not wise for me to keep them in my house, because I'd want to eat more than one. I'm taking extra vitamin C to make up for the craving some.

But it is! Wink

I don't just eat bacon. I also eat hamburger, chicken, cheese, lettuce, and cream (in tea). I'm doing a classic induction, so it's 20 g or less carbs a day (it's usually around 10) and boatloads of fat, for energy. I don't think this is a good long-term diet either, it's just a short-gap measure for me to de-bloat for a while. If you eat like this for longer than a few weeks, you really risk getting gout. Imagine explaining to my school that I gave myself gout...

The bacon stench in my house is starting to bug me, so I may have a couple of days of chicken and salad.

Hehe my dad thought so too, years ago. I'm doing induction too, but plan to stick to the induction phase throughout.

Muscle or fat?

I should gain some weight too. I got a very thorough health check this year and I should apparently gain 0.2 kg of fat and 2 kg of muscles to reach my ideal body composition.

Atkins is very unhealthy. I think complex carbs are good for us~ lots of fruits & veggies. I'm trying to cut back on meat. There are better ways to lose weight than Atkins, IMHO.

Concerning the BMI, don't stick to it too much. The one who has muscular legs, the BMI isn't the best indication of obesity. Get one of those doctors that can put you on a machine and tell you what % of body fat you have. Sounds like you have much more muscle. Good on ya!

It's just as unhealthy or healthy as any other fad diet. Just eat normal. Meats, grains, fruits and veggies try to have some of each every day. Eat in moderation. Don't eat till you are full, just make a certain amount and stick with it. This is easier for me here as I like to cook. don't eat fast foods cept for a special/rare occasion

I'm aiming for muscle but I'm expecting it to be a struggle.

These 6 meals a day are killing me!

I eat loads of veggies. I just cut grain products out. Atkins doesn't mean you eat only protein. You just cut carbs to a minimum. It's not a long term diet, but it does work and the weight stays off (or at least it did with me for 7 years until I moved here and starting indulging in noodles). I just want to get back to a happy size 0 from this 3/4. I'm short. It's a healthy size.

Some people on Atkins try to sneak in a bit of carb here and there because of the allowed 20 grams. I'd rather get 20 grams through broccoli, kale, and other delicious veg.

Actually, "just eating less and moving more" works wonders. It's probably why my normal, non-dieted to weight here is lower than my normal weight in Canada. I find a fad diet now and then just breaks habits... some people do fasts or juice cleanses, I go on a meat bender, which I'll probably chase with a bit of a fruit bender.

I'm using fitday.com to track my calories. It has a lot of pre-made boxed foods and also generic nutritional information for basics like breads, cheese, chicken soup, etc. But what it doesn't have is Korean food. So now I'm stuck entering it manually from other sites. Also they spell kimchi, "kim chee" and that bothers me for some reason.

Does anyone know of a good calorie counter website (free) that has a wide selection of Korean and other "ethnic foods"?

I'm totally paranoid about overeating, so I always assume I have like 3 servings of soup when I input the info. Hopefully that helps.

Quick update:

I've just finished day 4 of my diet and fitness routine.

I have been eating and drinking the following:

-meat
-fish
-eggs
-a little cheese
-a little fruit (apples and bananas)
-Americano with a little milk
-Tea with a little milk

I've completely stopped eating and drinking the following:

-bread
-rice
-chocolate, cake, ice-cream, etc
-soda
-alcohol

So I've gone not quite all out Atkins, but definitely low carbs.

I've also gone to the gym the last 4 days. I'm currently doing around 60 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weights, situps etc, so that's a 90 minute workout.

As I mentioned, I weighed myself last Sunday and weighed in at a hefty 83.5ks and I need to lose around 14kgs. Crying or Very sad

Considering my current diet and exercise routine, what do you think would be a realistic weight loss (in kgs) after week one?

I'll report back again on Sunday after the weigh in!

Good luck to everyone in a similar boat, it sure isn't easy changing old habits!

1kg a week is healthy. You might lose more the first week because of water, but more than 1 a week is pushing it. It's possible, but not good for you.

Since you're on low carb, here's what I had for dinner tonight:
smoked salmon cut into strips, then rolled up with light cream cheese in kim (the seaweed for kimbaps). Really fast and easy.

Tomorrow night I'm making old-fashioned oyster stew, sans the crackers.

Nothing to weigh myself with here, either, but I intend to pick up a scale after payday.

When I left the US, I weighed in at 173lbs (78.47 kilos). At 5'4", that puts me at "obese" on the BMI scale, but you might not think it to look at me. I'm built short and stocky, with either a high-end of medium or a low-end of large bone structure, broad hips and shoulders, and VERY muscular, thick legs (which I think contain most of that BMI-skewing weight). I actually have a waistline and muscles and everything, it's just a bit flabbier than I'd like.

Since I've arrived here, I've lost an insane 5 inches off my waistline (36 to 31, booyah!), I don't huff and puff as much going up hills or flights of stairs, and my face looks thinner in photos than it did 3 months ago. I also fit better into trousers that were too snug on me a few months ago, and the trousers that used to fit me are falling down over my hips. I have NO idea how much, if any, weight I've actually lost. I may have just replaced the fat with better muscle tone in my legs (which were already pretty buff to begin with).

Once I get a scale, I'll start weighing in and reporting the results here, as well as a waistline-measurement (as that's more of a concern to me than weight).

Thanks for making this thread! Hooray for support! <3

Are you a boy or girl? I'm 78 kg and I am 6'1". Long torso, broad shoulders, nice muscle tone and a V...however I have laxed on going to the gym for a couple more and I want to get my 6 pack back...but I don't want to pay for a gym.

Hmmm....any good at home exercises besides the usual? I downloaded P90x about a year ago...but never looked at it. My shape 4 months ago was vastly superior and I had more energy...need to get back!

6 meals a day for muscle building = pure bodybuilding myth. Check out http://www.leangains.com (works wonders for me!)
