This winter semester at our university, I'm teaching a very advanced group of English speakers, and as I'm more familiar with teaching beginning and intermediate learners, I was wondering if anyone had some tips for things to focus on for teaching advanced learners.
Right now we're using this book called Natural English, by Oxford-- it's terrible. The book is all over the place, and has no real cohesive focus I find. In addition, some of the grammar points such as gerunds and adverbs of frequency, are simply too easy for the class.
Right now what I'm doing is basically using the book VERY loosy, as a sort of topic guide, and doing a lot of partner and group discussion, while only lightly touching on the grammar points.
While this is getting the students to speak a lot, I just don't feel it's as challenging as it should be-- any advice? |

It depends on the focus of the class. What do you want the students to be able to do by the end of the course? This will determine your planing and materials. My guess is you want to take their desires, their actual needs, and the university syllabus into account. Without knowing any of these it's a bit difficult to give you any useful advice. |
