Why are recruiters so touchy in Korea. Ive managed to piss 2 of them off in only one day.
First one tells me that a school wants to interview me and tells me when they will be calling. I then find out that this school pays by the minute so 30 classes/week actually is 40 classes/week. I tell the recruiter that I dont want to work at this school so I dont want the interview. She gets annoyed and emails me saying that since she found me this job for me that I should at least have the interview for a job I dont want. And shes not going to tell the school, I will have to in the interview. WTF?
The second one offers me a position with a school. I decide to get onto Daves and find out about a thousand horror stories involving this chain, and particularly the ones in this city. When I tell the recruiter that I dont want to work for a school who continually rip of their teachers she basically says sorry for wasting your time. ie. Im not going to offer you any more positions because you turned this one down.
Why is this so hard? It should go something like this:
Recruiter: I have this position at XXX school. Do you want it.
Teacher: No, this school just wants to rip me off.
Recruiter: Ok, Ill tell you when I have something else.
Teacher: Ok, thankyou.
Why do they have to get catty? |

I agree that most of them are long on greed and short on customer service.
Sounds like that first one over-extended herself on her promises to the school, re: guaranteeing them an interview with you, before she pitched you the job. Now she's trying to save face by forcing you to interview for the school, regardless of your disinterest. So she can make up a more palatable lie to the director, as to why you turned it down, post-interview.
My advice on that second one, though, is don't make the mistake that others do sometimes, and form opinions and make decisions based on your eslcafe feedback and research. There's a lot of fluff and over-dramatized reports here, and you should only use this place to supplement your own research (ie., getting and contacting the email addresses/phone numbers of current and past teachers at the particular school).
Good luck on the job hunt and keep filtering.
PS....PM me if you keep drawing blanks on the job hunt. I know some schools in Daegu that are hiring in the next month. |

Because all they have is crap. If you don't want crap, then they figure that they have nothing else for you.
Try getting a job without a recruiter. It really is the best way. It's not like your recruiter is going to do anything for you after you've been placed at a school. |

so what if they are working for the school. we are the teachers, why would we want to get stuck in a job we dont like because they cant wait to collect from the owner. i hate recruiters but most schools wont hire a teacher without one |

You also have this lovely thing happening,
Recruiters posing as schools or offering fake jobs just to get your name and info. I sent my resume to a "school" hoping for an interview, what I got back was a note saying,"we just hired a guy for that job, but there's a great job in another city that you might be interested in".
It's pretty hard to find an ad that ISN'T a recruiter.
Unless you know someone working there, how the hell are you supposed to contact a school directly? |

It is possible that school has more than one branch. Often a franchise will have one recruiter for all of its schools. |
No, that's not what was going on. I had applied to an ad for a small private hagwan, to an address that was supposed to be a foreign teacher.
The next thing I know, they are asking me about working for a completely different school in another city.
I've also applied for positions teaching adults, but when they answer back they say,"that job was just filled, how about this great kindie position?"
It's very hard to find an honest ad. |

I 100 Percent agree with J.B. here.
The recruiter has nothing but crap, and is frustrated because he/she has been turned down by others who also realized the jobs offered are crap
Pay no mind -- absolutely none -- to this recruiter. This is Korea. It's all about looking out for YOURSELF. In contract jobs, you must learn to be selfish and cover your own butt. Just about anyone else (or perhaps I should say EVERYONE else) will be watching out for their own best interests. Don't rely on anyone too much, or you will get screwed. |

I've been trying to find another native speaker for my school, and we've had to go to a recruiter because not enough people apply for jobs. I've put up an ad on Dave's, two on englishspectrum, and a few more other places. It just doesn't work. My director is very picky, so she needs to see a ton of resumes in order to find the right person. Recruiters, and I hate to say it, are a necessary evil. |

Are people more likely to trust a foreign recruiter rather than a Korean recruiter? |
I think so.
Maybe because it seems that many foreign recruiters have been in the classrooms themselves, so they have at least a bit of a grasp on reality when it comes to arranging schedules, classroom expectations, etc.
Other things being equal, I'd be more likely to trust a foreign recruiter who'd taught here before too, than a Korean who might be a perfectly honest guy but who'd never set a foot in a classroom. |

Well there has to be good recruiters out there.
The ones who get contacts at universities and public schools would be my choice.
Just keep shopping around. |

I just don't understand the job search logic of 'don't use recruiters or why are you using a recruiter?' That's like saying 'why don't you want to narrow and marginalize your chances of fielding the most amount of opportunities available?'
Sure, most recruiters have a bad reputation, but they still represent schools that might be good for you. Schools, in most cases, you are not able to apply directly to.
So, apply directly to the limited amount of schools that you are able to get email addresses/contact numbers for, PLUS, email your resume to as many recruiters as you can find, to yield the most results as possible. Then research (talk to the current teachers that work there) and filtering from your results, is going to generate a much better potential school for you, then trying to apply directly to the fraction of schools that advertise directly.
If you are the type of person that can't say no to a recruiter's unsatisfactory offer, then please DON'T USE RECRUITERS.
If you are the type of person that can't tell the difference between a good contract and a shite contract, and will trust whatever a recruiter says about it, DON'T USE RECRUITERS.
But, to deny yourself access to the larger job market that they represent, because you think you have more leads or are above having to ask help from someone else, because you think you are well-connected or net-savvy, you're just being stubborn. Subtract emotion from your job search, play the full field to generate the most results, and be methodical in your research of the offers that you get. |

I'll put the plug in for FTUnion ( www.ftunion.com ) as they have been nothing but professionals and have helped me find a great job. When my last job went to total shit they even came in and talked to the new owner and worked out a plan.
They went way out of their way to help me. I didn't expect them to do so after I had signed onto the contract.
I've been invited to the owner's house a few times and treated very well by them. I'm really glad to have used their services and to have met everyone who works for the company.
It is a business but I know they will do everything within reason to help you find the job for which you are looking. I strongly suggest you contact them if you are going to use a recruiter. |

Find a job without a recruiter but make sure you speak, speak, to someone who works there. If the school won't let you do that, then they are hiding something. I have had three jobs thus far. The first, through a recruiter, was shite to say the least. ECC. Need I say more. The next two I found off the internet and through friends and have both been really good jobs.
Steer clear of recruiters. |
