I don't know about him, but my family is quite wealthy and I agree with him. Here's a little story I'm quite fond of. It's actually about politics rather than wealth, but it applies just as well:

Quote:
Chuang Tzu who had been a court official, withdrew to a solitary place for leisure and thought. The king of the State of Ch'u wanted to enlist Chuang Tzu's services. He despatched two envoys with a letter that stated: "Hereby I appoint you my chancellor." The envoys delivered the message to Chuang Tzu as he stood knee-deep in Pu river, fishing with a bamboo pole.

Still holding his pole and looking speculatively at Pu river, Chuang Tzu said:

"I believe there is a sacred turtle, offered and canonized three thousand years ago, which is worshipped by the king. Wrapped in silk it lies in a precious shrine on an altar in the temple.

What do you think?

If you were a turtle, would you prefer to lose your life and leave your dead shell to be an object of worship shrouded in incense for three thousand years?

Or would you prefer to live as a plain turtle that drags its tail in the mud?"

The envoys replied: "The turtle might prefer to stay alive and drag its tail in the mud!"

"Precisely", Chuang Tzu replied. "Go home. Leave me here to drag my tail in the mud.'

My father and his wealthy friends are dead turtles wrapped in silk. Certainly, it's lovely silk, but it's not for me. Like Master Zhuang, I'd rather drag my tail around in the mud.

Even if my not rich, all it took for me was to realise that I don't enjoy spending money. Not being poor is by no means overrated, but the concept of money not bringing happiness is not exactly something new.

What does this mean? While I agree with learning the local language, you shouldn't use any Korean in your classes, unless all the good EFL certificate courses are telling lies.

Not saying to use it in class. What I mean is that language expresses a way of thinking. Having some understanding of the way your students think helps you to meet them halfway.

You can anticipate the kind of errors they'll make (or understand the errors they do make) when they try to say something in English. And it allows you to include culture in the lesson rather than just "teach English".

Also, learning the the local language offers motivation for the students (especially kids, who have no real goals for learning English). After all, why should they learn your language if you don't learn theirs?

(That's a rhetorical question, by the way, and I am pointing the finger at myself. But I find the more I learn their way of thinking, the easier it is to teach and the easier it is to think of ideas for class.)

rooster makes some good points, too, though.

You're right. You can have more money than you know what to do with it, but be miserable. Not being poor is very good, but other things are far more important. Spoken from experience.

It sucks that you have to have an MA to make more than 20k per year in the West. I wrote another post about this but I was told by the employment centre here to take my BA off my CV or else I wouldn't find a job. In this area, it overqualifies you for all the crappy jobs and... well, there are nothing but crappy jobs on this side of Canada. Don't think it's much different elsewhere.

Official statistics for 2011 in the United States:
The median salary for an adult male with a bachelors degree only is $60,788.
...with an advanced degree it is $81,744.

I live in the north east of England and all we have are 12k customer service jobs. The place has seen endemic under and mis investment by successive governments. It's a real challenge to break even and I know so many people in their 30s still living at home. I can see the appeal of Korea for sure. Few privates and your clearing 1000 a month.

I'm from Canada and all we have is 12k (after taxes) customer service jobs. That's $12,000 per year which is half what you guys are making in England.

Yes, as time and time again as shown on Dave's, all the smart ambitious people go to Korea and are making boatloads of money and are indebted to nobody but themselves. They have it all figured out and everyone left in Canada is stupid and broke. Not only are they clearing $12,000 a year, they have car and house payments on top of that! The banks must be really stupid giving $250,000 mortgages to people who clear 12K a year.

this times 1000.

You're not fooling anyone but yourself if you stay here content with your measly 2.2 million. Unless you marry a Korean, one day you will have to go back and face reality.

Sergio Stefanuto, do you know what conspicuous consumption is? Neutral

Yeah, I gained a lot of weight in order to show off my wealth and income. I acquired the Gucci model of bodyfat to make myself look richer and better than others. I was all about image, superficial me.

Oh, how apt you are.
