Thanks for the information. I didn't even realize I will have to wire money to cover my loan payments. My monthly payment is 152 dollars I believe, starting in February. Well, I like studying foreign language so I hope to make a lot of friends to practice Korean with. I hope it will help keep me focused.

What's going to happen is you will need to setup a bank account here in Korea. Your employer should help you with that.

I would request a KEB account, because they seem to be the most friendly for us non Korean speakers.

There are many ways to send money home. Wiring, travelers checks, there was some paypal scheme someone was posting about. I don't know which is best for your situation.

And you can setup your existing checking account back in the US and your student loan account to have automatic withdrawls. This is what I do, and I send money home every 3 of 4 months. That way you don't really have to think about it every month. I just check my balance every once in a while to make sure I don't miss a payment.

Yea, I will definitely do as you said. I already have the automatic withdrawal set up. I'm super nervous because I have a current balance of like 5 dollars...

Hopefully I can stuff about 500 in there before I leave and take another 500 with me to Korea. That way I will have 3 months to deposit more money into the account.

Also, I have a 2004 Honda CR-V fully paid for which I could sell for about 4 - 5 thousand. But I really don't want to do that.

Sad I miss my CR-V. I sold my '99 right before I came here. 175,000 miles on it. Ran like it did the day I bought it. I actually got Kelly Blue Book private sale value for it! What ever you do, don't go to Carmax if you decide to sell it. They will screw you.

Remember that if you keep the car at your dad's house, you still need to keep insurance on it in most states. And someone should drive it every couple of weeks to keep the engine in good shape.

Sorry to hear about your loss, my condolences

Actually selling your car may not be such a bad thing. Keep $2000 to bring here as back up money. That way you are financially stress free. Put whatever you have left over into your bank account that pays the automatic payments for your student loan. Which gives you significant breathing space before you have to start sending money back home. The exchange rate sucks right now.

That way you will probably be in a better financial situation than about 90% of NET's that come here. You can easily save $1000 a month, especially if you don't drink. Then whenevwer you get back home you'll easily have paid of your syudent loan and you'll have a pocketful of cash to buy a new better car.

The world economies isn''t going to turn around anytime soon. So it'll still be a cash buyers market. Especially the second hand car market. You will come out with a very good deal. So really it's a win win situation. You win buy being cashed up in slling your car and you win again when you can buy a good car with you saved Korean cash.

That's what I would do anyway, but then again I've never formed an emotional bond with a car

Also try to contact EPIK direct for a PS job, they're the official Govt contracted dept who has the final say on all recruits Just google EPIK Korea. It stands for English Program In Korea

Good luck!

This was actually a gift from my parents, my mom specifically. I try not to get attached to inanimate things but it happened Confused Like jrwhite82 said its a good car. But If I have to I will sell it, but I am really trying not to. I have a garage I can keep it in while I'm gone.

In 2007 my parents sent me on a vacation with a Vietnamese friend of mine as a graduation gift when I graduated with my Bachelors to Vietnam. I stayed with a friends family for 7 weeks. Best experience of my life. I didn't want to leave. Did I mention I have/had awesome parents. Surprised

I know Korea will be totally different and I'm trying to prepare myself. From what I hear Korea is the exact opposite of Vietnam. I would describe Vietnamese people as anti-xenophobic. I love Vietnamese people and I wish I could go there, but its just not practical.

BTW - How long do you think it takes to fly from Korea to Vietnam? Think it would be expensive? Thinking about a 2 week vacation trip Surprised

Its totally understandable why you don't want to sell your car.

Vietnams about 3-4 hours away the flights are roughly 800 000 Won return but I went during August which is a busy time and I didn't really book ahead that much.

Yup I agree, The Vietnamese people, and the country are beautiful I spent just over 3 weeks there. From my experience I found that teachers get treated with a lot of respect from both the Vietnamese and large ex pat community ( many of who have done teaching stints).

But really, by the sound of things, you're not going to be the steriotypical western teacher here. So once your boss/colleagues realise you're not going to turn up to work hungover and disorganised they usually treat you with a lot more respect. Or thats been my experience anyway

Sorry about your loss.
Just my two cents: go ahead and start getting the wheels rolling because you will likely have the FBI check in a couple of weeks. They say 12 weeks but I got mine in 8. Try a bring a 1000 bucks. Even though you don't drink you will want to go out and meet people (if you're anything like me!). Good luck!

Hi Riker,

Geez, your situation sounds just all wrong. Sorry about your Mom ( It is terriable when a loved one gets sick, but we certaitly don't want to see them going through painful and uneccassary suffering).

BTW, How does teaching ESL in Korea relate to Medical School?
I know you want to justfy your reason as making money, but there are no gurantees that you will make ANY money at all. In fact, with the current saleries, it could take many many years' before you can begin to think about financing that medical school education.

Also, if you really wanna save quickly, you might wanna try to UAE ( higher saleries that are tax free).

I agree on selling the car however, he mentioned its sentimental value. I can understand. Perhaps you could borrow from your family? It would be easy to repay them if you find a decent contract.

I don't plan on financing Medical school from Korea! I have one semester of Pre-med left, and my MCAT.

All medical schools offer in-house financing. I just need to finish off one last semester of Pre-med. But honestly, I'm looking to take a breather for a while. And paying off my 8,000 Student loan in the process does not sound half bad either.

Unfortunately, my last MCAT was scheduled before my mother was ill and I had to take it just a few weeks after her passing. I didn't have time to prepare, as I was in the ICU most of the time. I was just not myself so I bombed it. At least I think I did. I voided the score at the end of the test so nobody will see it. I was out of money, so I couldn't even re-schedule the date.

My degree seems to be of no help in this economy. I have a B.A. in mathematics along with my "post Bac" pre medical. I have a good GPA and I was the organizer of our Delta-epsilon math club. But I don't have any professional job experience since I've worked in our family retail business ever since I graduated ( my parents paid to well to leave!). I can't afford a teachers certification and the process is too long to help at the moment anyway, but I did get a substitute certification. Waiting on that to come through. I am about to apply to every business in my area today. Restaurant, fast food, whatever - I just need some work !

Riker: If you are trying to make a few bucks for the next couple months, try going through a temp agency. I have made about 8,000 dollars in the past 6 months. (Most of it was not saved.) Temp agencies are mostly in big cities too. They take a cut of your paycheck but you still end up making $10 an hr or more. Hope it helps.

You know I tried a staffing agency, but they only found work that is 35 - 40 minute drive from where I am at 8.50/hour. I can't even afford the gas ! I'm going to apply to every business near my house for now.

Could you do some math tutoring in your area? You could advertise your services for free on Craigslist. You could make some extra money and get in some teaching experience. And I'm really sorry about your mom. I wish you the very best of luck in Korea.
