Today a fellow K teacher asked me what my plans for the weekend are. About midway through my typical, "Oh just drink too much coffee, maybe see a movie, etc" type response, my fellow American teacher pipes us "boring."
I say, "Oh you are boring?"
He says, "No, you are."
Admittedly, I don't do much. But it's been a bit since I was invited by him to partake in social activities at any rate.
Anyway, I don't have anywhere to go with this other than it sort of hurt my feelings. I laughed it off, but it gets to me. I know I've cursed about this in other topics, but is it really so wrong to not be a social drinking party type OR a hiking uber naturist? For Christ-ees, can't a girl spend the weekend drinking cheap wine, embroidering Banksy designs onto tea cozies and reading about cults on the internet without being boring?
To make this a topic and not a long-winded Facebook status, do you feel the foreigner has a responsibility to immerse themselves in the culture? And/or have you become more or less social living in S. Korea? Please explain. |

Okay, separate rant. I like going out. I enjoy talking with gents with similar interests. But the ones who seem interesting start to act like I have the TB when they find out I am married. So if I sway the less interesting ones with their own names tattooed on their stomach to buy me beverages, it's really only in defense of the cannibalistic dog world we live in.
Tfunk: I wouldn't mind having a more interesting life. But I'd like it to be within walking distance. I like my life, but I feel I am not meeting social expectations. This bothers me because I am very concerned with how I am perceived by others. |

My life is interesting enough but it's often in the form of various sequences of meaningless and disjointed occurences.

Problem: He is from a large city. I am from Idaho. He is a product of what I perceive as "rich" (private school) socioeconomic class. He is very smart as a result. I don't play WoW, but my college thesis was on videogames. He has no girlfriend but many many friends who are varied, a few of which are prettier than I, more of which that are likely smarter. (If it's possible to be locally "famous", I guess he is.)
I think I lost. So uhh, anyone else have this issue or just me? Just me?

Exactly. Who cares what other people think? I don't go out drinking on a regular basis, and there are those that treat me like a leper. So what? I'm happy doing what I do, so I'll just keep right on doing it. It's a pretty immature attitude to assume it has something to do with getting laid or whatever. It's the kind of comment you'd expect from a 30-something year old guy who can't seal the deal with a young lady. Who'd want those 2 inches, anyway? Don't take it to heart and just enjoy your life in whatever way you like. |
