Good call! Best full-length concert ever filmed (imho) by Scorsese no less.

The Band played backup for years behind Ronnie Hawkins in a cruddy little club in London Ontario just before I was of age to go in. Damn! Then Dylan stole them, to his credit, then they hit out on their own, much to theirs. Genius band.

This film brings together many of my musical heroes sounding fine.

Confessions of a Superhero
It's on HULU. A sad and funny film about people who dress up like heros for tips in LA.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but Crossing the Line is great. it's about Robert Dresnok, a US soldier who crossed the DMZ and defected to North Korea in the early 60s He's interviewed in the present and claims no regrets - he's still there with his second wife and family after becoming famous for playing American villains in NK propaganda movies.

It's a fascinating film - largely because of the hints throughout that Dresnok is not what he appears and not telling the whole truth - this creates some interesting tensions.

Iraq For Sale
The film claims that the contractors in Iraq have been cheating the U.S. tax payers with the gov looking the other way. For example, 63 out of 67 of Hallibuton's water purification facilities provided contaminated water to U.S. soldiers. Soldiers showered in water that contained pathogens that could give them blood diseases such as malaria and cholera. The film claims many abuses done by the contractors in Iraq. Another side of the Iraq war.

David Attenborough's Life series if you're into wildlife. Most BBC science documentaries are very high quality.

The High Life is a good sports documentary about Scottish cyclist Robert Millar.

That's what I was going to recommend too: Hoop Dreams on youtube herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBF3ymDQJfU

Also, Michael Moore's Capitalism: a Love Story.

Also, Paul Greengrass's Sunday, Bloody Sunday. Not, strictly speaking, a documentary, but a cinematic reconstruction of events, on the lines of United 93 but, obviously, based far more on factual evidence since we know far more about what went on.

Then there's Daniel Gordon's documentaries on North Korea: the North Korean defeat of Italy in the 1966 World Cup, The Game of Their Lives, http://www.youtube.com/user/ThisIsAdo#p/u/7/fZcARgTqADU, and a documentary on North Korea today A State of Mind.

King of Kong - chronicles a guy attempting to break the world record on the Donkey Kong arcade machine.

Hands on a Hardbody - pretty much a mockumentary for anyone watching it, but not for the participants. This shows an old fashion car contest: last one to keep their hands on the car wins the car.

Super High Me - a comedic look at the effects of smoking marijuana over the course of 30 days a la Super Size Me. Provides a detailed look at the medical program in California.

Ganja Queen - story of an Australian woman busted for smuggling pot into Indonesia.

Touching the Void - a harrowing true story of 2 climbers in the Peruvian Andes.

Has The Real Dirt on Farmer John (2005) been mentioned yet? I have not seen it yet but several of my facebook friends were raving about it, and it got pretty good ratings on IMDB as well. I thought I would pass it on.

It's good. I bought the dvd after watching a public screening of the film. It's about community sponsored farming. City people basically buy shares of a family farm and the farm grows quality organic vegetables.

It's a great idea and one where you could pretty much guarantee you're getting vegetables that are not genetically modified.

Farmer John is a hilarious guy, so the film is quite entertaining.

The End of Poverty
I haven't watched this yet, but it looks promising. Right now you can watch THE WHOLE FILM FOR FREE because someone uploaded it on YouTube.

South of the Border
Oliver Stone's documentary about Hugo Chavez. He also meets up with the leaders of 7 other South American countries to teach us what they're really all about (as opposed to what Fox News and CNN are saying). The American news media paint Chavez as a threat to America.

There's a lot of good ones on this list already.
Wesley Willis: The Daddy of Rock 'n Roll is my suggestion.

Dirt, the movie.

http://www.amazon.com/Dirt-Movie-Jamie-Lee-Curtis/dp/B00366E1AK/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1294476615&sr=1-1

As I always ask my Korean students, "Do you like dirt?"

"DIRT! THE MOVIE is an astonishing, humorous and substantial look at the glorious and unappreciated ground beneath our feet.

Dirt feeds us and gives us shelter. Dirt holds and cleans our water. Dirt heals us and makes us beautiful. Dirt regulates the earth
's climate. Why do we humans ignore, abuse, and destroy our most precious living natural resource? Consider the results of such behavior: Mass starvation, drought, floods and global warming.

Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, DIRT! THE MOVIE tells the story of humans trying to re-connect to dirt the living skin of the earth. Traveling from the vineyards of California to the plains of Kenya, DIRT! reveals how repairing our relationship with dirt can create new possibilities for all life on earth."
