I just want to know if anyone else noticed what we saw this morning at Costco. It was the usual Saturday crowd at Costco and the food court and bakery section had the usual crowds. But the meat section seemed to have an especially large crowd and it seemed to be in a state of "Grab everything you can" kind of frenzy. This was especially true of the pork section. I saw people with entire carts of pork and beef. I didn't notice any special sales in that section and I was wondering if maybe FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) may be causing a run on imported meat. Costco sells Australian beef. Did anyone else notice this?
I can post about some of the sales but the frenzy in the meat section was the big story. |

Coupons I remember because I used them-
3,000 won off Sweet Potato Cake
9,000 off Tide liquid detergent (a great sale because 1 large Tide liquid detergent lasts a long time)
2,300 off Swiss Miss packets (I didn't buy it, but with the cold weather this is a great sale)
2,800 off the 20 pack of frozen burgers (This is a great sale because of the potential scarcity of Korean beef and the fact that these burgers are good to have around.) |

I think it has to do with the prices getting out of control on meats lately due to the FMD situation.
I was at Homeplus last night and thought I would pick up some hamburger meat.
Didn't happen. The Hanwoo ground beef was 17,800 for 300g!
The Australian was 13,000 for the same size. They did have a small 100g pack for 5,500 but I decided to wait until I go back to Costco (although that may not be too safe a bet now either.) |

The prices are usually stable at Costco because they buy in large quantities, but you'd better be ready to deal with a large crowd and stock up. Who knows what will happen to prices in the next few weeks? Be smart and try to stay ahead of those who end up getting ripped off. Use your freezer and your knowledge of Costco's use of Australian beef to your advantage.
FWIW, there was also a large crowd around the salmon section and they were also in a frenzy. Any idea why? Is FMD driving up the prices of other protein sources like salmon? |

Hopefully meat prices won't skyrocket like cabbage a few months ago. |

Foot and mouth is the reason, coupled with the lunar new year coming up. That's the time when you give meat as a gift and as meat is getting scarce, people are buying it fast and early. All the big department stores have been doing their holiday meat buying early, everyone is getting in on it.
There was an article about this in the Joongang Ilbo sometime last week, but I don't care to go and find it right now. But, based on what I read, IMO, that's the reason. |

if this FMD doesn't get solved soon, we can all expect the price of Milk and beef to increase.
I heard it was something like 20% of Seoul Milks milking live stock which were slaughtered. that is a huge blow to them. I heard that they might not be able to supply the children in the schools with their milk next year due to this.
you thought milk was expensive now... just wait..
and what about your over priced Latte? well it just got more expensive.
will the government open up to imports? of course they wont..
they will just let the farmers raise the price. |

Except for the fact that they cut tariffs across the board this year because of price increases... |
