There's a new competitor in the fairly priced big pizza category. I found it today at Homeplus in Ilsan. It wasn't in the store itself, but on the first floor along with the other restaurants/food court and bookstore. It has a different name (perhaps a different company) called Papa Valley. I guess it doesn't matter whether or not they're considered part of the store, though their receipts were Homeplus receipts.

They had a few options, Bulgogi, Supreme (my choice-mushroom green pepper, olives, red onion, pepperoni and ground meat) and some thing else (Light, maybe?). It's 46 cm (18 in) in diameter. Pretty good size.

As far as quality, it was good. I think it was the most similar to American style pizza that I've had in Korea. Not sweet, not a ton of sauce, not a ridiculous amount of toppings (though a fair bit), and no corn. The crust was moderate thickness and a bit bubbly.

It only took about 20 minutes. They give you one of those little buzzers that shake when your pizza is ready. I don't think it works upstairs while shopping; they told me just to wait over in the food court.

I also noticed a pizza joint in the food court above my Emart selling 46" pizzas for W11900. While I haven't been able to get my hands on an Emart pizza (yet), I'm glad they started this price war.

I've seen these huge pizzas in HomePlus and Emart.

How many people are they designed for?

I know they're probably marketed as Family ("Pamily") pizzas. But us westerner's tend to have larger appetites. I would comfortably eat a "Largee" pizza from PapaJohns, PizzaMaru, 59Pizza etc.

Have you eaten a whole one yourself (not possible surely), or did you share it with 2 or 3 friends?

I can gobble up a Pizza School pizza in one sitting with a 20oz Sprite. Just sayin'.

We have that at our E-Mart. It has evolved into a monster.

You have to get there early in the morning to order the giant cheap pizzas and come back in the afternoon to pick them up.

They cut off orders around 3:00 PM now.

I hope our Homeplus starts the same thing, minus the wait time. From the store's POV, it's a dream come true. Provide a service that keeps the customer in the store for an hour or two. What are they going to do besides spend money on other crap?

Our E-Mart messed up because they tell people to go home and come back hours later. They totally screwed the pooch on their pizza scheme.

Sure, they sell a ton of pizza, but they are losing money by NOT keeping customers in their store.
