What area(s) of Seoul have the worst living arrangements?
For example, I doubt you would be provided a nice apartment in Gangnam from your school/hagwon. |

It's hard to say since Seoul isn't very big (geographically). I work in Jongno which is pretty much a no-go as far as cheap real estate is concerned but I'm probably going to end up living somewhere that is significantly cheaper and only 15 minutes away on foot.
On another note, my friend lived/worked in Gangnam and found a cheap apartment that was a few blocks behind the busiest part of Tehran-ro. His apartment was tiny, even for Seoul standards but if I can remember, he was only paying 600k per month for it with 5m down in key money. It had windows and a separate kitchen, too. |

Prices in Gangnam tend to be on the higher side compares to other parts of Seoul, so I find it unlikely that a school/hagwon would spend a pretty penny on providing a teacher a nice apartment (somewhat modern, working utilities, and clean). |

Or they'll offer you a housing allowance. Sometimes key money is the problem.
One of my buddies was working for Kangnam School Board and he was given 700,000 a month but lived around Seoul Nat. and paid around 350,000. Others would chip in their own money and live somewhere better. Like someone else I know who worked in Daechi but chose to live in Itaewon in some high-rise apartment with a good view for 800,000 a month or so and then complained about being broke all the time.
Fees are higher in kangnam for parents but teachers make the same money, as the school has higher expenses (rent, teacher's apartments, etc). |
