I checked my mail on the way to school this morning and found an envelope sent by my mother sitting on top of the mail box outside my apartment block. Everything had been opened. The envelope contained letters from my bank at home including my new bank card and a set of guitar strings. Everything had been opened and there was no attempt to seal it again. Is this common?
I know that customs will check packages but this was personal information as well as a bank card just left lying open. I'm pretty annoyed about it. Should I expect this every time?

Have any of you experienced it or is it just one nosy mailman?

Wow, that is horrible and not too mention extremely illegal. You should file a complaint immediately with the authorities!

I've had parcels not only opened, but stolen from twice. They barely taped the boxes back together. I've never had this in any other country. It's a shame.

Things stolen? Really? That sucks gal. Yea, I was pretty pissed off yesterday, but at least everything was still there... I think.

Anyway, I don't think I'll be having anything sent to the house anymore.

I've had parcels opened and resealed with tape labelled Korean customs but nothing missing that I've noticed. Also bills in open envelopes that maybe weren't sealed.

It's not normal for a letter to be opened, but I've never received a parcel in Korea that wasn't cut wide open. I think customs opens all the packages from overseas and never tapes them back up. It was pretty embarrassing when my friends back home sent a care package full of condoms and sexual gag gifts to my work address, and my coworker brought the wide-open box to my desk from the mailroom.

Can't say much about other cases, but most 'adult toys' are (in theory) prohibited from importing under Customs Act Article 234. Porns are regulated by the same statute. Since the phrase 'good public morals' was used without a further legal definition, its interpretation is therefore arbitrary, causing constant complaints from Koreans who tried to bring those stuffs in yet got them confiscated. Some even took it to the Court, only to be told that the Customs can confiscate whatever they determine 'inappropriate.'

I think I've received 5 or 6 packages here and none have been opened.

You didn't say if anything was missing, so assuming you got everything intended to you, you got off easy. For Korea.

4 years ago, on a wintery December afternoon around suppertime, I came home to a tragic scene. There in the lonely hallway stood a letter from my dear old mother. The letter surprisingly didn't have a return address or a stamp for that matter. Naive lad that I was, I imagined horrible things, only to find out through reading the letter, that the letter was in a box with three blazers.

The box and the blazers went bye-bye birdie and I was left with a nice Christmas card/letter from mom. She made it up to me with a 2 day Fed Ex replacements, but it took the wind out of my sails for sure.

We don't always want to blame the Korean side though. They may have only recieved a letter to deliver - and the box may have been opened in California or wherever the departure point is from the usa.
