My university will be holding a career fair this month & the "Korean Education Centre at the Korean Consulate General in Toronto" will be there to recruit students. I hope to get more information about their organization and positions.

They've posted the following links: www.talk.go.kr / www.epik.go.kr / www.cakec.com

--> What are your opinions about/experiences with the teaching positions offered through TALK & EPIK?

--> Also, I do not have any prior teaching experience (I plan on getting a Trinity CertTESOL certification)-- how likely is it that I can get a job offer through these government-sponsored programs?

Talk is primary for those who have completed 2 years of study (do not yet have their degree), it pays less and can be for shorter terms (6 months). They tend to teach fewer classes as well.

EPIK is the national office of education program (administered by NIIED) for recruiting foreign teachers to work in the public school system. They require a completed degree and offer better salaries and a minimum of 1 year.

It is similar to the GEPIK program run by the Gyeonggi provincial office of education.

In all 3 cases the chances of getting work is good. Your TESOL cert is nice to have (and will give you a 100k won per month increase in your pay) but is not a requirement for work as a teacher in Korea.

For what it's worth: the TALK people I've met in my district are teaching in very small schools - WAY OUT IN THE BOONIES. Some have been boarded with a local Korean teachers' family (pretty stressful for 6 months), and others have long bus commutes to 1 or more small rural schools.

None of this seemed to worry them - as they were just uni students having a break from study - and earning a bit of cash.

Some comments from TALK people I've met:

"We have a school goat as our garbage disposal."
"My co-teacher left the school and isn't being replaced. I'm on my own."
"None of the kids speak English. I just do ABC."
"We had a really long unpaid orientation."

Not too sure how representative this is of TALK in other districts.
Good luck.

Does anyone know when the applications start for next (Fall 2011) semester for TaLk? I am finishing up my application papers to apply.

Also, is anyone here currently in or have done the TaLk program? I'm looking to get some more information about it.
