Hi,
Does anybody know the process for scrapping (breaking) a vehicle in Korea? Is there a fee, and what paperwork is needed?
Thanks! |

Isn't there something about if the car is over 10 or 12 years old then the govt will pay to take it off your hands (and I assume tow it away)? |

We just called the local used car place and asked them to take the car. they gave us about 250,000 for it and we gave them our paperwork proving that the car was ours. |

I've had to do it twice because of accidents. It's called 폐차 (Pye-cha but often pronounced more like Pae-cha).
Most car shops will handle it for you but you'd be best served going directly to a scrap yard to make sure you get the full price for it. You may be able to get advice or even handle it through your car insurance company as well.
Make sure that you get a 폐차장 (Pye-cha Jang - certificate) as well, as you need it to get a refund from your insurance company for the insurance you paid for the year, as well as to report the car as scrapped to your local Gu office - or else they'll keep charging you tax every year as well as fine you for not getting an emissions check on your scrapped car. |

bilbo, thanks for the info about letting the Gu office know! Didn't know about that!
We just scrapped a car (when the oil looks like "milk coffee" it's time to scrap it!). Stopped by the junk yard. Told them where the car was. They came, looked, told us the price they'd pay and towed it away.
Also, be aware that if you have any unpaid taxes/tickets, they'll know!! It'll come out of the amount that they pay you. And yes, notify your insurance company, even if you're transferring your insurance to another car.
Bought 1995 car in 2003 for 900,000. Trashed it in January and they gave us 350,000 for it!!! Not a bad deal! |

Had a car for about 3 years, didn't pay the taxes ever... whats the big deal with not having paid them if they are just scrapping it?!?! Any idea how much road taxes are? Probably depends on the car but mine was well over 10 years old. Need to get it scrapped, ASAP. I really dont wanna have to leave it on one of those rotating elevators in the car park. |

I'm leaving Korea real soon and feel like paying over a mil to get rid of a CRAP car is outrageous... |

Anyone have any phone numbers for Junk/Scrap yards in Seoul?
I'm looking for a tape deck for my Galloper and was told that I could call one of these places and buy one out of a scrapped car that's the same model as mine!
Thanks! |

Don't know a number, but be sure that you get the security code for the tape deck! My husband bought one this way and couldn't get it to work since no one could find the code. The junk yard wouldn't take it back either! |

So why not just abandon it? |
