If one gets a job teaching adults, does one still need to get a criminal background check?

Any recommendations for good companies that teach adults?

Yes, you still need the background check. It's an immigration requirement, not a school requirement.

I can recommend YBM for teaching adults.

yeah

universities. not adult hagwons - most have split shifts (work 6am - 11am, then 7pm - 10pm). you really want that? just be careful cos the adult hagwon recruiters (mostly bosses themselves) seem very nice, professional, and are great at telling you that 3 months into the contract, you'll "most likely" get a normal 8-5 schedule or something like that.

chances are you probably wont, and will teach split shifts 11 out of the 12 months of your contract.

good luck!

Unless you have a related MA/PhD and are going to work at a university as a guest professor (rather than a language teacher). They have a different visa.

If you are going to teach English (E2 visa) it is a requirement for the visa and not the job.

You are aware that teaching adults usually means long days and nasty split shifts (teach before they go to work (5-8am) and then again after work (6-10pm).

It would be far easier to get a job teaching older kids (G7-12) and work 4-10pm.

If you insist on teaching at one despite the drawbacks, here are the names of the few that I know of:

YBM SISA
Pagoda
SDA (associated with the Seventh Day Adventist church- not sure if you have to be an church member)
Berlitz?

Maybe someone else can add to the list.

I'm pretty sure the NETs at SDA are missionaries. But they may be on E2 visas because they teach English as opposed to spreading the gospel. So yeah, I think they are all practicing SDA members.

I always recommend my adult students take classes at SDA because 1) they are dirt cheap and 2) it will give them more face time with an English speaker.

I do warn them that they will be entering a cult-like atmosphere where one class will be bible-centric and they should expect a LOT of pressure to convert.

One of my students actually converted. I swear, he quit drinking soju, quit smoking, starting going to church on saturdays, and regularly solicits for his new church.

lol......

I am not SDA, but worked at an SDA elementary school. They could not get enough SDA members for the staff. It was all good.

Then, one cool dude who was SDA told us that they were going to hire him, and told him he would have to teach the non-SDA members classes about SDA. He refused. Good on him. Like we would have shown up.

This place asked me to to bring on my then BF (now hubby), but things had gotten so bad, I felt like I was pulling a midnight run even though I had finished my contract. Wow, did I feel fantastic when that plane was off the ground. (I should add, some of the people there were wonderful people, but the guy who held the power-not the principal-was a power hungry *beep*).

yeah, the split shift would actually be better for me because I would have more time with my child.

Yes, you do need a CRC. You even need a vulnerable sectors check.

They be a bunch of morons wrapped in a skin of poutine. It's not necessary, but if you really want it just lie to your local police station about where the business is located.

It doesn't matter whether or not you do a VSS anyway. It still only takes a day to process for the whole CRC. I don't think the VSS cost me any extra, either.
