Discarding an old laptop

I should firstly admit that I'm a neanderthal when it comes to technology.
Anyway, I had a laptop die on me, and I have since bought a new one. My problem is that I had passwords for Internet sites saved on the old laptop, as well as other documents, photos, etc.
So I'm a little paranoid that if I just put the laptop in the bin that someone could bring it back to life or remove the ROM and put it into another computer and have access to all of that information. I realise that this is probably a stupid question, but I am not tech savvy in any way, shape or form, and I'd hate to think that someone could access my email account, bank account etc etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks wormholes, but the problem with the old laptop prevents me from logging on. It goes to the intro screen on which you have to type in the password, and when I do so, the screen goes blank and goes back to that same screen, so I can't even log in, let alone download anything.
However, the very existence of the program that you sent a link for tells me that I'm not being overly paranoid. Maybe I'll just take to the laptop with a hammer Smile Thanks for the link and taking the time to send it on.

If you don't care about destroying the machine, get a screwdriver, open the case, take out the hard drive and destroy that. That is where everything is stored.
