Hi everyone,

I'm going to be leaving for Daegu in couple of weeks. I was hoping to gain some insight from the experienced people here on what the best way to convert my U.S. currency to Korean won would be. I plan on converting *some* here to be safe, but in general do you get a better deal by doing it in Korea? If so, is it better to do this at the airport straight away, or find somewhere in the city?

Thanks in advance for any and all clarification,

Doug

Do NOT buy won in the States. Do not buy won outside of Korea.

When you land at ICN you can convert a few (2-5) hundred dollars to won to get you through. Convert the rest at a local bank at your convenience. (dollars are easier to carry than won).

AS you exit the customs area (but still inside the secure area) there is an exchange counter (or 2) on either side of the exit door. Use one of them. You won't have the taxi touts looking over your shoulder when you stick a large wad of won into your pocket.

Why is that? I feel this is true for a lot of smaller currencies, such as Turkish Lira, Kyrgyz som, Nepali rupee and whatever the Hungarian currency is called. With Kyrgyz and Nepali currency, I have $20 worth of each that I can't get anyone to buy.

With Korean won, the rates are awful outside of the country, I've learned from experience. I had a woman at the Toronto airport berate me last year for not taking 270,000 for $300 Canadian.

Is it just me, or are you answering your own question in your post?

OK perfect. I have a few hours to kill at ICN before my flight to Daegu so I'll just take care of it there.
