Hi, i have a few questions about work in SK. I am graduating in August with an M.S. in Ed TESOL from an Ivy League University and a B.S. in el ed. I'll also have university (english language center) experience here in the states and camp experience in Gyeonggi. While i was at the camp, i met a lot of great teachers currently working in Universities in Seoul. They said that with my qualifications and experience i should be able to ask for top dollar. The thing is, im not sure what top dollar is!!! Also, they had mixed feelings about my age. I will be 24 in august - some thought employers would think i am too young, others did not.
So, when employers ask what i am looking for as far as salary, what should i ask for? And should i expect any problems concerning my age??
Thanks ALOT!! |

I don't think age will be a problem. This is a country where men get facials before job interviews to look younger. Starting a job after 30 is very difficult.
As for the pay, don't expect too much. There is more supply than demand for university positions. I could not give you a number. I believe more of the benefits for university jobs are in vacation time and working hours. |

based on 12 to 15 class hours per week, and given your qualifications; in Seoul, i'd say the low end of a starting salary would be 2.25 plus benefits. not sure about the high end, i'd guess 2.8? if i were in your shoes, i'd apply to the best schools and look for 3.5. |

Wrago - what are you worried about? You are more qualified than 99% of teachers in SK and you are a twenty something. I'd say you can just pick and choose whatever job you wanted but, as far as I'm aware, salaries are not for barter so you'll just have to accept whatever salary comes with the job you choose. I'd suggest you stop being anxious, even paranoid, and apply! If you think you are too old take a look at this thread:-
