About 7 or 8 years ago I did a liveaboard in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef out of Airlie Beach. It was absolutely phenomenal.
Since then I've only done a few 2-dive day-trips during my travels around southeast Asia (Thailand, Sabah and Bali) and about 6 dives in Ko Tao, Thailand. All of these were okay but they didn't compare to the GBR trip. I did head out on a liveaboard to the Similan Islands near Phuket in Thailand, but the water got too rough so we had to turn around and cancel the trip.
Anyways, I'm considering doing another liveaboard this summer, either late August or early September, and am trying to weigh where to go. Palau is definitely up there, but it's also very pricey. I've also heard great things about the Red Sea, but know nothing about it.
So I thought I'd ask all of you, if you've done a liveaboard, where did you go and what time of year was it, and would you recommend it? Because my holiday will only be 10 or 11 days, I'm looking at anywhere from 3-7 days on the boat. I have my Advanced Open Water and about 30 dives so I'm not looking for anything too crazy. I'd like a place with a lot of colour in the fish and the coral. Big stuff like sharks and turtles are a bonus, but not necessary.

The Barrier Reef is a big place, & there are plenty of reefs to explore off Cairns & Port Douglas much further north of Airlie Beach. The weather will be perfect in August, with maximum visibility, no cyclones & no box jellyfish. Typhoon season in the Philippines. |

The Philippines will be fine in august PROVIDED you are south of the typhoon belt. Anywhere in the central or western Visayas or north / eastern Mindanao or Palawan will be fine.
At that time of year try to avoid places north of that up to and including Taiwan (smack in the middle of typhoon alley).
Best bets are anywhere south of the equator. Spring going into summer = nice weather, no tropical storms to worry about.
Depending on how much time you have (for getting there and back) and your travel budget, there are LOTS of good live-aboard operations all through Oceania. I liked Tuvalu, Tonga and the Cook Islands. There were several to choose from (and I tried several of them). They were all pretty decent operations. 2 of them were on Privilege 48 cats and they were awesome.
Anywhere in southern Indonesia will also be decent but I have not used a live-aboard there; only shore based dive shops.
