I sent a letter to the newspaper:

"Hello -

Although I usually enjoy reading the Chosun Ilbo in English, it has a reputation among Western expats in Korea as being biased or unreliable. Generally, I don't mind, since I love the pictures of the day and I like the wide variety of news you provide. However, the cartoon accompanying the article "Volt's Car of the Year" (seen here: http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2011/01/17/2011011700756.html) is incredibly racist and offensive. How would you feel if an American newspaper wrote an article insulting a Korean car and drew a racist cartoon of Korean people? Americans do not have noses like that - it is a racist depiction, reducing us to features that Koreans perceive as 'different' - and we are not all white with blonde hair, either, which is something Korean media seems to ignore.

I would appreciate it if you would remove the cartoon and think twice about your Western readership when posting things like that in the future.

Thank you,
[my name]"

***

I'm used to small nationalistic/ignorant things on that site, but this racist crap is unbelievable. How do they think they can get away with that? I guess that's what happens when you've never known any society, race, or country other than your own. >:[

404'd.

Was it the cartoon with the two blonde dudes in the car with noses up in the air and as long as a pair of flagpoles?

Edit: Never mind, it's here:

Yet another cartoon featuring the good ol' Western nose Rolling Eyes from the Chosun Ilbo where they're so quick to take offense yet so stunningly ignorant when it comes to empathy and just push and shove to get their own - kinda like the subway ajosshi. They're just peeved because Chevrolet won because it had a larger weenie than the Hyundai.

Not quite. Fox news has Black, Hispanic, and other commentators. They critisize things with a bit of bias just like MSNBC does from the left. But Fox wouldn't dare write or post offensive things like Chosun Ilbo.

The cartoon may look racist but after reading the article, I can understand why.

LOL! I really dont want to sound racist or stereotypical, but if this one little thing annoys you then you need more. You need to learn to deal with this type of "stuff". There is racism all over the world, but it seems it just hasnt happened to you personally (as it has now maybe).

Living as a middle eastern person in Australia/America I can tell you that this picture isnt even half as bad as to what people in Aus/America used to call me. When I was 15 and people in class called me Mohammad or terrorist, I also thought "How do they think they can get away with that?"... Well, there isnt an answer, its just what happens and unfortunetly, you have to learn to get ued to it. I hate the fact that I had to get used to it.

But if you ask me, that picture isnt only demeaning to white people but also asians, who in this picture, look like the stereotypical asian. I hate the fact that they portray both cultures this way, but meh, it happens, life goes on. Unless you wanna go all Martin Luther King and make a change, nothing will change anytime soon unfortunetly. We can just hope that as life goes on, people will mature.

If I was you, I'd just do my best to ignore the subtleties, but then again, your probably not me... Sorry, I'm very pessimistic and cynical as you can clearly see Very Happy I also like writing lectures at 2:30am Very Happy yeeeahhhhhh

Why do the noses stick straight up? Is it because Koreans are so short that our noses actually look that way when they tilt their heads back to look directly up at us?

What a hilariously bizarre caricature!

Hardly an offensive cartoon.

If the 2 white guys pictured are car salesmen, then the Pinocchio length noses are rather appropriate.
