Hi all.
Just wondering if any one has been to Bangladesh. I have friends there and am planning on going for a week at the end of February. |

How was it ? I'm going there for 2 weeks in the fall. Cox Bazaar and Chittagong. |

You go for the people, not the sites. Chittagong is rather blah and Cox's Bazar is ok. Seeing the "shipyards" outside Chittagong is pretty interesting. Cox's Bazaar has a great beach but the water isn't that fabulous. Dhaka is a dump. The people, on the other hand, are extremely friendly and hospitable. |

Check for travel advisories. If I understood the news correctly, I think about 1/2 of the country is currently under water.

It is the dry season. I just googled "Bangladesh flooding" and nothing recent came up. |

I did put the caveat in my post, "If I understood the news correctly...".
After further checking, it is Sri Lanka (NOT Bangladesh) that is currently suffering from severe flooding at the moment. I only missed by 1000 miles. Sorry.

Just left there 3 days ago. I spent 10 days there and it is dry dry dry. As someone said, you go for the people. The sights are rather boring, but the people are interesting and nice. |

I was looking into going there, but it looked like a pain in the butt for the visa. Possible, but expensive and in-person visits to the consulate (no hiring an agency). |

Thanks all. I want to go to bangladesh because I have friends there and they can show me around. But I also just heard getting a visa is a pain and it is expensive. So this idea may get scratched. I guess there are many closer/cheaper places to go. Thing is I did want to see some friends, but the hassle may not be worth it. |

i just watched an amusing documentary about a couple of american guys that built a boat in bangladesh to attempt to sail to australia. anyway, the locals seemed pretty interesting. also mentioned that it's the rainiest country in the world. the documentary is called "once we were pirates". you can watch it streaming on documentary heaven dot com |

Aren't Bangladeshi just muslim Indians?
Going for the people, wouldn't it be as interesting to head for India, as there would be more sites and the same kind of people, more or less?
How different would Bangladeshi people be from Indian people? Just curious.... |

Well there is some truth to that but it is easier to meet people in Bangladesh. That is, since there are no tourists, there are virtually no people trying to get your business, scam you, etc. You really don't need to have your guard up. Can't say the same in the touristy areas of India (such as Varanasi, Agra, etc). |
