We are being given 5 days off in February. That would be Wednesday Feburary 2-Sunday February 6th. I'm getting frustrated trying to figure out where to go! 5 days doesnt seem like a long time to see anything! Some ideas I've got.....
Guam: It's not exotic but it's warm and sunny, and the flight is reasonable (just over 500). Apparently you can see the majority of the island in a few days. Is this place totally boring or a good idea?
Jeju: I figure I might not have the chance to visit and am seeing really good deals on flights. Is it at all worth it to go in the winter?
Beijing: I'd like to see the great wall at some point but not sure about going in the winter. I can deal with the cold, but is it as much of a sight when it is covered in snow?
Any other suggestions? I would like to keep the flight under 600,000 at the very most. We are going to Thailand at the end of December and don't want to spend the next 3 months paying off plane tickets! |

Mind telling me where you're doing your search? All the flights I found to Malyasia included 19 hours worth of connecting flights and layovers which I figured would make a 5 day trip more like a 2.5 day trip... |

Airasia is good to get to Malaysia.

But you're returning at the end of Lunar New Year when all of Asia is on the move, so the return flight is expensive, taking you a little over 600,000
If you start work later in the day, you could try a flight that lands you in ICN early morning of the 7th.
EVA air has 400,000 return to Taiwan. Warmer than Jeju, but not than Guam

Air china has 420,000 return to Hong Kong. Might be good for Chinese New Year, but again, not warm. |

I would highly recommend against travel to Beijing, China in the winter. It is REALLY cold. I wasn't prepared for it. I think I got sick for a week or two after that...
However, 5 days is definitely enough for Hong Kong. And HK isn't cold! It's pretty nice, although I found it odd how people were wearing ski jackets and hardcore winter jackets in 15-19 degree C weather! |

Guam is better than most people think. It's like going to America but not. The eather should be nice and there are places you can go and be the only people on a clean beach.
But for Lunar New Year expect alot ok Koreans and Japanese to be there. |

Guam would be fun and some good memories but nothing terribly special.
HK would be cool but not very active during New Years. The weather should be 15-20 degrees.
Taiwan is likely inactive as well.
I recommend Okinawa, but I have no idea about flight price. |

I found it painfully boring, to be honest. It's nice as a semi-American retreat, but the combination of being death to your wallet and not a ton going on make it a place I recommend against. |

How cold is it really in Beijing? I'm from northern ontario (canada) and I can deal with really cold. -30 is not uncommon to me. With that in mind would it be a worthwhile trip? I've been reading that the Great Wall is empty in a good way, and that the celebrations are pretty decent. I also worried that Guam would be boring, so now that I've read more and see more people saying "nay" perhaps it's not really worth the money or the trip out there. To be able to go away for 5 days at around 400$ including hotels, I'm thinking Beijing might be it! I wont be here next autumn and hear the summer is crowded and ridiculously hot so perhaps Beijing it is! I would really like to hear other opinions or comments in case I'm missing other great ideas! |

I think Guam would be very hard for $400 for 5 days. But please don't let people tell you it's boring.
But there are many things to do.
scuba diving
deep sea fishing
snorkeling
swimming in the natural pools at Inarajan(this was one of the most enjoyable things)
Ritidian point (this area is a reserve and the beach is very clean and secluded. My wife and I were there for 6 hrs and saw about 6 other people.
WWII stuff is all over the island and in the water (this could take a few days in itself)
The Plaza de Espana and all the other things from the Spanish occupation.
The aquarium (yes it's an island in the Pacific but their aquarium is very nice and worth a visit)
The Chamarro Village on Wednesday nights (get there arounf 5:30 or so and enjoy some of the food while it's hot.
bonnie stomping
Then there is the whole Chamarro culture to dive into.
Mermaids Tavern and the Jamaican grill are good places to eat.
Then there is always the typical things like western returants, shopping (Guam supposedly has the largest K-mart in the world) The Micronesian Mall. You can always stop by Guam G.A.I.N (Guam Animals In Need) and volunteer. |

Try the Philippines. It's close and many flights to and from Korea, though getting a ticket will be tough let alone getting a ticket priced reasonably.
You can skip Jeju Island. I've lived in Korea for 14 years but have never had the need to visit that place. |

Hong Kong is nice that time of year, 5 days is a good amount of time too to see a pretty nice place. Might break the budget though. Try Air China or maybe Cathay have a deal for you. |

I'm going to bump this thread as I'm sure I'm not the only one making last-minute plans for LNY. I was thinking Philippines but I'm leaning heavily towards Hong Kong as the flights are much cheaper and there's too much to see in the Philippines for only a week. Can anyone else give more information on HK during LNY? From what I know, there's nothing I have to do with visas or anything of that nature, correct? |

As others have states, HK people are mostly hermits at home during this time. I have no idea about whether businesses are open or not.
Philippines is awesome and you can see a lot in 1 week. I'd go there if I were you. If HK's flight is cheaper, the high cost of everything will quickly off-set that.

I would much rather spend at least 2 weeks in the Philippines. It's a huge country and from what I have researched so far there is a lot to see and do. I'm pretty sure I would leave Philippines after a week feeling like there was a lot left to do. |
