As a rule of thumb, don't live south of Geumjeong station on line 4. |
Change that to south of Sanbon (one stop south of Geumjeong). Sanbon, Beomgye, Pyeongchon and Anyang are the four most livable places in that area. |

Call 1330 on your phone.
That is tourist info and they will usually have an English speaker on hand.
The can tell you how to get from point A to B, or to a tourist info center where
you may get further details on local buses. |

Hello...I can't respond to messages or start a P.M. because don't have 25 posts. At least that is what the site tells me when I try.
Watergirl...thanks, what dong do you live in and bring on some Ansan or Siheung spot info., please...I'm in Neunggok-dong, there's a gym and it's clean and friendly, but that's about it, as far as I can tell. I'm in need esp. of a used book store to buy and sell English books.
I found I'm new to Ansan/Siheung on FB so maybe I can meet some people that way.
Cerebus, thanks for the insight and which station do you live near?
If you don't mind contacting me at: [email protected] that would be cool.

so I live in Shiheung. i find there is a close knit foreign community in shihueng and neighboring Ansan. Most are members of this facebook group 'i'm new to ansan or shiheung'. It will take a bit to find people in your area who you like. lol.
Shiheung is spread out so it really depends where yu live and its best if you can walk to the subway station. In Ansan there are starbucks, alots of western wall marts like stores where you can find many non-korean products, 'Homeplus' or 'Emart' and quite a few foreign restaurants but they are not all together in the same area.
the drawback is that it is a commute to Seoul but I find it ok once you get to know people, we take the subway in and split a taxi back about $40
I've considered moving but I've heard that foreigners in Seoul tend not to be as cohesive. I don't know if this is true though.
Anyways, it depends where in Shiheung you will live. One part of shiheung is closer to 'Bucheon' and the other is closer to 'Ansan'. 'If you'll be close to Ansan, you can mess me and I'll send you the spots where everyone goes etc.. |
I used to be one of the admins of the Facebook group New to Ansan or Siheung.....if you shoot an email to Jen Brouse (she's the girl who started the group) I'm sure she'll be more than forthcoming in advice - just for goodness sakes don't tell her it was me who sent you as she hates me Anyhow she used to live in Siheung (lives in Ansan now I think) and is very social and probably knows a sizable majority of the NETs in both locations. |

that's great, I'm glad you got a good school. So where in Shiheung are you? ..not sure where that neighborhood is, but what subway station are you closest to? |

So a school close to Sosa station (in Siheung) would definitely be closer to the Bucheon line, right? That's where the school that offered me a contract is. I've searched for that Facebook group mentioned a few months ago, and nothing remotely like it seems to come up, so maybe it was disbanded or something. |

Don't let being at the end of the subway line fool you - there is more than the subway in Korea.
For example, I live near Seohyeon station on the Bundang line. Arguably the most popular station on the line, it's got plenty of amenities. Now, really, while it is the closest station to me, I'm not right near it, as the recruiter advertised (having lived here a few years, I knew that, so I wasn't taken by surprise).
From my house, I can take a bus to Seohyeon station in 15 minutes. I can also take an express bus to Seoul in about 25-30 minutes. I can catch a bus and be at Yatap station in 15 minutes, home to the intercity bus terminal.
From Oido, you are a quick bus/taxi ride away from the Incheon subway line, or the Incheon branch of the Seoul subway line 1. There may be a bus terminal near where you are at, or a slew of express buses.
So, don't judge the place entirely based on the subway. You may find it easier and faster to take a bus, or to take a bus to another subway station/line. |

It depends on which part of Siheung. I had a friend who lived in Wolgot last year and she hated it. A couple of us visited the area for her birthday party and couldn't believe there could be so little to do in an area so close to Seoul. There were no gyms, coffee shops, or big stores. If you can visit the area before you accept the job then do it and look around and if any recruiter pushes a job in Wolgot ask for something else. |
