I need some recommendations for good tv shows to watch. I don't have television at home so I watch everything on my computer. So far, I have watched the entire series of Battlestar Galactica, the first and second seasons of Community and Parks and Recreation, and I'm up to date on CSI:Las Vegas, CSI:NY, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and Law and Order: SVU. I have now resorted to CSI: Miami, which I have been avoiding because I usually find it overly dramatic and badly written with implausible story lines and stilted dialogue. Yes, I like tv. Yes, I also do other things like read books and venture out of my apartment. I'm just looking for other shows to watch while it's cold outside and I have downtime. Thanks for any suggestions. |

Watch V
It's a remake of an old 60's show about Aliens that come down to earth and stuff. But it's not particularly clich or anything. Into the second season now. I think it's just a 2 season thing.
Alternatively, THIS episode of Futurama, which is actually the best thing ever - http://www.vidxden.com/p2fxfv0f01bf/Futurama_S06E07.avi.html |

Yeah, I've been watching V and I've gotten into it. I think it's on season 2, episode 3 now but I'm having trouble finding it. I remember watching the 1983 miniseries. Pretty cheesy if I remember correctly but maybe worth a watch again. The lady who played Diana in that series has a guest role on the new series. |

If you like Law and Order and CSI, definitely watch NCIS. I was never a really a fan of the genre when I was in the USA, but lack of English shows on the tube here and I started watching and I'm a big fan of it now. And the guy who's the lead, Mark Harmon, was apparently just voted best TV personality this year back in the USA.
Other shows that are good are the Pacific, Boardwalk Empire, and the Walking Dead (another show I found in Korea, great show). Are you into the crime solving genre mainly? Or do you like all types of shows? |

btw, if you like Parks and Recreation and Community, you'd more than likely enjoy the Office (if you haven't seen it already). Last few seasons have been just okay, but the first like 4 were really good. |

Yeah but that's the thing with NCIS. You are forced to watch it due to no other option.
People will like anything if you watch enough of it. The idea of a GOOD show is something that is instantly good and endurably so.
NCIS isn't bad as far as the genre goes but, the genre is sucky. Characters tend to do the exact same thing every episode, all episode. They have one acting idea and stick to it for 9 seasons or whatever it's on now.
Consequently I haven't turned my TV on here in 8 months or so. It's gathering dust like a hoover. |

I'd say yes and no. Yes, the English programming is limited depending on your cable or whatever you have, but I'm by no means "forcing" myself to watch something because it's in English. Just because when I turn on the TV at 4 in the afternoon and the only thing on is the Ghost Whisperer doesn't mean I'm watching it. It's a quick click. That's one of the things I was glad about coming to Korea for was it would let me watch less TV. And I do watch a lot less TV, and finding myself reading a lot more which I enjoy.
Yet on the other hand, the lack of programming has helped me find some new shows I'd really never given a chance before. My two favorite of these are the Walking Dead and NCIS, which are both pretty entertaining yet come from two genres I typically don't watch. The lack of English programs allowed me to find them, but the lack of English shows did not force me to like them. |

Well... force is such a strong word (haha). But It's clear in many cases that people are conditioned into liking something they would otherwise consider a bag of w*nk.
Actually I thought Ghost Whisperer was pretty great.
Also this ridiculous softcore porn? maybe its classed as porn... where aliens were trying to understand what 'love' was (Kind of like V, incidentally), so they had sexual relations with various people, and made it very clear, repeatedly that they were so advanced that this love was unnecessary in general and it confused and intrigued them. And then they think they started to feel it and had lots of meetings about it.
I think I gave up on Korean Tv because of the advert set up. It was 2 minutes of ad's, followed by some show, and then 15-20 minutes STRAIGHT of ads, before starting up again. And alternate between that. It's HORRIFYING. Especially if I didn't feel like getting up and doing something else in the mean time. |

the best shows ive watched recently were:
THE WIRE - most ppl have sen this by now, but i slept on it when it was on tv, then i finally gave it a shot and watched all five seasons nearly back-to-back. great show, best scripting and characters of any show ive seen
BREAKING BAD - very funny, quite dark comedy-drama. agai, the acting and scripting were top notch. the elad characters arent always likable, but theyre well developed and perfect for the storylines. kind of like 6 Feet Under i think, or maybe Dexter but ive never seen that, just what others have told me
MISFITS - its a uk show, about a bunch of asbo youths who develop powers, i guess like a uk take on Heroes... more aimed at the 16-25 audience, but trust me it was alot better than the description sounds, well worth a watch
now im finally catching up with the sopranos, ten years late but nm! glad to have something to really get into.. |

If you like 'dark" go with Son's of Anarchy" good writing, strong cast. Touches on the isolationist streak in the American psyche". Slow to develop have to watch all the episodes. |

Frakk no to V! If you're going to watch a science fiction show based on an older, cheesier sci-fi property, go with Battlestar Galactica. It is entirely satisfying and it is a completed series which means absolute gratification (well, y'know) upon completion. None of this waiting for the next season.
Should I start a separate thread about The Walking Dead? Because, as an avid reader of the comic, I have a bone to pick with the series. I'm not sure if it is the discrepancies between the two (because I'm a nerd, maybe a purist, though I try not to be) or if they made some seriously bogus choices. (Okay, can we at least admit the premise of the series finale was retarded and WAAAAY too action/Michael Bay like? Yes? Awesome!)
Spoiler alert: If I don't see any kids committing homicides on the series by the third season, they have lost a viewer. Because I don't take kindly to the whitewash direction it's heading. |
