I got my Disclosure Scotland basic check notarised by a solicitor in Milton Keynes (didn't know at the time that I could get it notarised by DS) then apostilled by the FCO. I had the copy of my degree cert notarised and apostilled at the same time and my docs have been accepted by immigration.

Having just been through the process (after 1 Sept) - am happy to answer any queries!

Couple of questions then if U don't mind.

1) My notary (at local solicitors office) just refused to notarize my original disclosure certificate, instead he will notarize a copy of it. He said it is not required to have a notary stamp on an original document. Is this true?
Will the FCO accept this for apostillization or do I need the original cert notarized?

to return the favour (for saving me from apostilling my degree cert!)...

I went to around 12 solicitors last year and everytime was told the same story - we can not notarise a CBC becasue we have no way of knowing if it is a true/factual document.
They said they would only notarize a copy to say that it was a true copy of the original (no help what so ever).
in my mad search in the following week, I discovered the following;

Scotland disclosure can notarise the CBC themselves - then you can take it to milton.
There is some sort of bent solicitor who works in cahoots with the Milton keynes office who will notarise a CBC. The staff at Milton Keynes will give you directions to his office.

So a long winded answer - they will not accept a copy, however, it is possible to get a notary (for a tenner) from the solicitor round the corner from the office of..... that i cant remember the name of.

I have no idea why up until now I haven't seen this thread, since all the other threads on this subject seem to end abruptly in mid September. Are the people who know the answer to how to get an apostille in the UK being assassinated?

My questions are:

Do I need to get a notary to legalise the documents, or can I ask a solicitor to do it? Notaries tell me solicitors are cheaper, solicitors tell me that notaries are the only ones that can do it... And they want to charge me about 70-90 for their signatures like they're Elvis. And Elvis is dead so that adds a premium.

Could I just get my solicitor to photocopy and sign my original degree certificate and get that apostilled? I think that exact question was answered above but I want to confirm what I read Smile

Could I get a solicitor in MK to sign them off on the day so I could hand them into the FCO counter service in person? <--- le-paul, do you think I could use this mysterious back door notary on the day as well?

My Disclosure Scotland criminal check has the stamp and signature - does this mean it doesn't need to be notarised before I take it to the FCO?

It depends where you are in the UK. In Scotland, for example, all solicitors are technically notary publics. The same is not true in England/Wales/N. Ireland. It has to be a notary public so if you live in England/Wales/N. Ireland, keep looking!. You should pay no more than 10pounds for having the stamp put on your documents. Any more and you are being ripped off. There is a solictors five minutes from the Milton Keynes FCO office that can do it for you for 10 in person or 40 odd pounds to apostille it (and add on the FCO charge to that), take it to the FCO for you, and return it to you.http://www.neves-solicitors.co.uk/site/home/ is the website of that solictors. Prices may have changed since last year so call them to find out

Yes

Yes

My Disclosure Scotland criminal check has the stamp and signature - does this mean it doesn't need to be notarised before I take it to the FCO? This last point seems to be up in the air. I've seen people post online about having done exactly that. I have no idea whether it would be accepted or not

I had the original disclosure notarised and apostilled. I was told by my recruiter that I had to send off the original disclosure.

'Fraid so. AFAIK the FCO in Milton Keynes is the only place you can get the apostille done.

BTW, have you checked with your folks that Disclosure Scotland signed and stamped your BD. If they didn't, you either have to send it back for them to do that or get it notarised by a solicitor. I think the FCO won't apostille it otherwise.

Actually, I asked for them to stamp it.... but they didnt. Eerse holes. I thought I heard something like the British embassy in Seoul could apostile documents (not degrees) for Brits living in Korea... hmmm.

any luck with getting your CRB stamped/signed by disclosure scotland?

I applied online too, got it sent to my parents (only took 3 days???) but they forgot to stamp it, despite my request.

i'll be in the uk for a week over the new year and pray to god that they recieve my mail, stamp and return it before i catch the plane back to seoul.

to make things worse, my hagwon has managed to lose my original degree.

Yes I had similar hassles. I had emailed Disclosure Scotland asking for notarisation but it was overlooked on that occasion. I went to two solicitors to try to sort it and it was a right hassle. Amongst other things they were so rude. In the end I ordered a new disclosure as it turned out to be far cheaper and quicker. That time around they got the email requesting notarisation and the rest went smoothly.

My Disclosure Scotland form came yesterday - somehow they'd managed to spell my name wrong (and so rendering it absolutely useless). When I called up to get them to send out a new one I asked about getting it signed and was told that they would apostlle it for me. When I asked them to clarify they stated "stamp and signature".

Do I still need to send this in to the FCO to be apostlled? As far as the interweb goes it seems that only the FCO CAN apostlle documents?

What they're doing is notarizing your document. You still need to send it to the FCO to have it apostilled.

The current Footprints Recruiting visa guidelines state that immigration are no longer accepting CBCs from Disclosure Scotland. Anyone know if that's true?

If true, then that is insane.

DS is the only agency that can provide a national check to Uk citizens.

Can't be true - i'm in the process of applying for my visa and have been told that DS will suffice (although it's taken them 4 attempts and six weeks to get my Disclosure correct and signed!)

And your local polce station can provide a criminal background check I've been told (although they warn this could take up to 4 weeks).

It would be sheer madness if it was true. The Disclosure Scotland CBC is the ONLY way an individual can get a STATE-WIDE (i.e, the whole of the UK) check. Going to your local police station and asking for a check there only covers England. And takes weeks and weeks to arrive.
