I just downloaded Sparklehorse and DangerMouse's "Dark Night of the Soul."
Sufjan Stevens' new album, the Age of Adz, and Candy Claws "Hidden Lands."
All quite good.
The last good/funny movie I downloaded is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Oh, and I'm obsessed with BBC miniseries, so I can never go long without getting my Pride and Prejudice fix.
TV shows aren't really my cup of tea, but I did get briefly addicted to True Blood and Mad Men when I first got here. |

Around this time of year the Britain Music Awards, Country Music Awards, American Music Awards are decided and Grammy nominations are announced. Gives me quite a few ideas of what I've missed.

| I just downloaded The Voyage of the Dawn Treader of the Chronicles of Narnia. By far the best of the three so far. If you're resistant of a bit of schmaltz along the way, I recommend it. |

Ack! I killed the thread! Let's give it another try with a somewhat comprehensive type list. Mostly old stuff, but a couple of new things in there.
UK costume drama miniseries.
Daniel Deronda (2002). A lush adaptation of George Eliot's sympathetic tale of Jewish Britain.
Vanity Fair (1998). Jarring soundtrack, but a fascinating tale of a woman who won't compromise an exciting, full and rich life merely for the sake of propriety.
Pride and Prejudice (1995). When I saw Kiera Knightly's version I winced, but I wished that the mother had replaced the insipid characterization in Jennifer Ehle's version. Jennifer Ehle is Elizabeth Bennet.
Jane Eyre (2006). At last plain Jane is sexy. Still plain, but love is in the air, and the madwoman in the attic is convincing. So is Sinjin (sp) Rivers.
Longitude (2000). Curious why ships can find their way across the ocean? It shouldn't be curious that a clockmaker is the protagonist. Michael Gambon stars, which is reason enough.
Wives and Daughters (1999). OMG, the protagonist is so cute!
Downton Abbey (2010) Edwardian Upstairs/Downstairs.
(In the past couple of decades BBC's production values have leaped forward. They have luscious scores, proper sound design, and much better cinematography. It's why Top Gear US is entertaining, but Top Gear UK is brilliant.)
UK Series.
Misfits. If our friends in high school got super powers.
Zen (new). Italian detective in sharp dress and with an English accent solves crimes within a context of corruption.
Wallander. Moody Swedish crime fiction. Brutal, heartfelt and stark.
US series.
Mad Men, the Sopranos, the Wire, of course. Boardwalk Empire. Lately as filler I began watching House, and it's entertaining enough.
Stargate Universe. Something dark from the stargate family of series. Who woulda thunk it?
Caprica. Unfortunately short lived, but an interesting contemplation on artificial intelligence coupled with ubiquitous personal data floating around. And the first ever Cylon? Hot. (Prequel to Battlestar Galactica, which is a must-see.)
Shameless (new). William H. Macy as Bukowski family man. Looks good.
The Good Wife. Solid TV drama with a very pretty middle aged lead. Shoot, if only I had gone to law school . . .
Inappropriate comedy.
The Trailer Park Boys (Canada) If you have ever, even once, cracked a beer for breakfast, you are capable of enjoying yourself for hours watching these guys. I can relate, and that's friggin' scary!
Seven Periods with Mr. Gormsby (New Zealand) Required viewing for all teachers. Good luck finding it though.
Happy downloading, but this time, if the thread is dead, I can imagine you're too busy watching for Dave's. |

Subtitle -not sure where youre from, but have you ever seen the UK original of Shameless? on like its 7 or 8th season now... io watched the first 4 and it is brilliant, one of the best uk comedy-dramas of the 00s, but i lost track of it of late (good characters left, and i got out of touch with it, but might pick it up again)
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shameless
lots of british humour in drunken, council estate manchester accents.
=================
on the recent d.load thing....
Maddslinky - Make a Change (melodic garage/dubstep, probably the best "dance" music album released last year)
Caribou - Swim - synthy house shiz. good if you can stand partying with hipsters. bad if you cant
Toro Y Moi - Causers of This - like above but better. synth pop, indie dance, whatever you call it. really good, but kinda pretentious.
Soweto Kinch - The New Emancipation - Hip-Hop, Jazz and Spoken Word. good if thats your bag. will appeal to die hard fans of both hiphop and jazz. without sounding like a lame critic, its somewhere in between herbie hancock and tribe called quest. not as good as that combination, but still excellent
Aloe blacc - Good Times - excellent soul music on Stones Throw records. you will probaly know the lead single I Need A Dollar - was massive last year, used as the theme to how to Make it in America
Mayer Hawthorne - Strange arrangement - superb throwback retro soul, also on Stones throw. have not met anyone who didnt like this album, and is one of the best live acts ive seen in the last 12 months. off the back of this d/l, i bought the vinyl.
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark fantasy - overblown and egotistical, but still way ahead of any commercial rapper/producer
Raekwon - Only built 4 cuban Linx Part 2 - "sequel" one of the best hiphop albums ever released... over hyped and under delivers, but still, some of the best hiphop of recent times
Wu-Massacre - Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man on one album, like a wutang elite - superior hiphop
and Sopranos Season 1 - long overdue i caught up on this.
and Transformers 1 & 2. michael bay making big robots beating the stools out of each other, whats not to like? |

I wasn't entirely impressed with The Walking Dead. I guess it's nice to have a TV show with zombies and high production values but so far they haven't done anything new or interesting with it.
And I'm pretty sure that Breaking Bad is the best show out there right now.
I downloaded Black Swan... it was great. I also found a torrent with the non-special-edition versions of all 3 original Star Wars movies, which I am quite happy about. |

Walking Dead was the biggest disappointment of last year imho, no where near enough zombie capping! Some of the episodes dragged

+1 - Season 4 will be out in the summer |

I was pretty let down with how the show carried out over the season. I think I'm going to download this Shameless show a few people mentioned. |

As other posters've mentioned "Boardwalk Empire" was well worth the download and weekend's entertainment.
I've always liked a series that makes you think, "hm! Is this true?" and end up wiki'ing every person, character and actor, involved to see how factual it actually it is. THAT'S the kind'a series I enjoy watching. |

Enter the Void from Gaspar "Irreversible" Noe.
Stone with De Niro and Edward Norton.
Burke and Hare with Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis (and one of the best orgasm scenes in the universe).
All 2010. |
